“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

Yep, it is always a great idea to be flippant with the person deciding on your visa, or deciding if you can enter on said visa.  I remember a story of an Australian attempting to enter on a K1 that was flippant with the CBP officer.  They were not allowed to enter and their visa was canceled.

I will come back to this issue in the K1 to AOS thread on the main site. It deserves a serious discussion there. In my opinion, Part nine question one on form I-485 and the accompanying guidance are not worded very well.

I wasn’t really referencing the bias or perceived bias of the BBC, I was more commenting on why any government is funding a news organization.  We talk about state sponsored media with respect to totalitarian regimes, and it is true, so why do we allow governments to fund any media?  Now in the U.S. it may be different as we are supposed to have a separation of the government with the media which I deem a good thing.  What we saw though in 2020 was the government actively suppressing stories via media and social media.  Is that a good thing?  Elon Musk, love him or hate him, actually bought X to  stop that practice of the U.S. federal bureaucracy controlling the speech on that platform, and it has worked so far, much to the chagrin of those government agencies.  I know, it is all about disinformation, but who decides what is disinformation?  I actually like the BBC, and I agree, they tend to be fairly centrist in their reporting, but the U.S. government has no business sending US taxpayer money to them.  Would you agree with the UK government sending UK taxpayer money to say Fox News, or ABC, etc.?

I am not familiar with reporters without borders, but like many NGOs or as I like to call them GFOs (government funded organizations), they also have an inherent bias of keeping their funding streams alive.

The BBC has existed for around 100 years. It seems to work well. It is kind of at arms length from the state. The governance and financing seems to have worked well until now. I think people will miss the BBC when it has gone, but its days are numbered.

It would seem strange if the British government sent money direct to an American broadcaster. However, the BBC might partner with a foreign broadcaster. I don't know why the American government would send the organisation money.  Presumably there was a purpose.

I don't know what Elon Musk's motivations are. He likes to be the center of attention. He also likes breaking things quickly. Hopefully they can be together again! I had a Twitter account, but deleted it. It was full of anonymous people insulting other anonymous people. Lots of free speech, but I did not feel I got much out of it.

In terms of who is responsible for deciding what disinformation I think we all are. It is possible to learn better critical thinking skills. "Don't know and don't care" is an often over looked response.  We don't have to have an opinion on everything. Getting off social media and reading a book might do some of us some good. I am trying to set up a discussion on political philosophy group in the town where I live. Looking at some of the great minds of the past could possibly give us clues about the future rather than relying on anonymous accounts on social media.

I think Reporters without Borders have a variety of sources of income. Hopefully, their funding streams will not disappear. Ranking countries for press freedom seems a good thing to do.

do.

In this I completely agree.  It is the people that need to decide what is disinformation and what is not.  The issue I see, at least when the Democrats are in charge, is movement toward the government doing this either through a “Disinformation Tsar” as suggested under the previous administration, or by some faceless unelected bureaucrats.  This smacks of the regimes ruled by the likes of Putin, KJU, Maduro, etc.
