I received a response from the NVC stating that my reported income was insufficient and that I should find a joint sponsor:

"The income reported as stated on form [I-864] [I-864A] is insufficient to overcome the public charge ground of inadmissibility for visa issuance. To avoid delays, an additional Affidavit of Support (Form I-864) from a joint sponsor may be submitted. For more information, visit https://nvc.state.gov/aos. A consular officer will decide if you meet these requirements at the time of the interview."

My AGI is $22,000, but my actual income is $48,000, which includes:

  • $30,000 from dividends
  • $18,000 from rental income

In addition, I have significant assets:

  • $1.3 million in stocks, cash, and bonds
  • $200,000 in real estate (excluding my primary residence)

It seems like the focus is mainly on AGI, even though assets and investment income provide financial stability.

Has anyone successfully had their assets considered at the interview? Or is a joint sponsor required no matter what if the AGI is below the threshold? Would appreciate hearing others’ experiences.

It will be down to the Consulate Officer

Thanks. I guess I'm wondering why they sent that notice. I have read the rules and qualify. Is it because they always send that notice?

And if the CO rejects do I have a chance to get a joint sponsor after the interview?

It seems it is automatic

Every case I can think of they issue a RFE for a joint sponsor
