Immigration Accounted for All U.S. Population Growth in 2023 for the First Time Since 1850

 

Immigration accounted for the entirety of the U.S. population growth between 2022 and 2023, according to the Migration Policy Institute (MPI).

Birth rates among American citizens dropped 2% from 2022 to 2023, but the number of immigrants climbed by 1.6 million, reaching a record high of 47.8 million.  That's a population increase of 3.6%, the most since 2010.  "The fertility rate fell to 54.5 births per 1,000 females of ages 15-44 in 2023, down from 56 in 2022," reports NBC News.

The percentage of foreign-born Americans stands at 14.3% which is slightly less than the record of 14.8% in 1890.

Nearly 75% of U.S. immigrants are here legally, and almost half are naturalized citizens.  [...]

It isn’t surprising. In most developed countries natural birth rates have decreased below replacement rates. It is a reason for higher immigration rates, the economy needs people so they have to come from somewhere. Having adult immigrants move to the US is more beneficial than just having a child born here. The cost of educating them is bore by their home country so the US is benefiting from their productive years instead of only being a drain early one.

I forget the prcise numbers but remember reading an article in the Guardian? about the increase in the unemployed numbers in Fermany an extra million? which seemed to be totally migrants.

 

So it depends, certainly in the US a lot of the costs are split between different levels of government so for example there may be no sigificant cost at the Federal level but there is at the State or lower levels.

 

Plus of course many other factors that are not directly economic.

No, doesn't sound like a bad thing to me. A nation of immigrants as it always has been. You can make a lot of arguments about the falling birth rate, but the truth is unless couples are having comfortable and stable lives in most aspects, babies aren't going to happen. I don't see that improving any time soon.

It is a choice, they system maybe inadvertantly produces the results it does.

 

A comparison would be historicallth being fat was associated with the wealthy not the poor.

 

Having a tan associate with the poor as they had to work outside.

 

There are many such examples, just look at the education system.

There are many such examples, just look at the education system.

 Overall there is evidence that young people are becoming more conservative in their choices - from reduced drinking numbers to being selective and reserved or dysfunctional regarding sex and it is not limited necessarily to those people who were raised this way for religious reasons. People are choosing to lead single lives for factors that usually fall under economic reasons. Some may be too choosy or unrealistic about picking a desired partner, but to me the glaring issue is if you haven't got the stability to raise a child you shouldn't be having one. You also have couples needing to move back with their parents to care for them because their parents aren't financially stable either, leaving no time for having kids. I'm sure there are also some people who have no desire to raise kids because they are very self-focused on living a certain lifestyle.

Not a good thing considering most of it was illegal. LEGAL Immigration is always a good thing.  They are not processing legal cases that quickly. Fertility is a huge issue in the States right now, and something to be addressed.

I am literally totally on board with that.....  EXCEPT......  there needs to be a very high level of control over the quality and exactly which immigrants should be increasing US population.  Immigrants literally made America great in the past and are America's greatest hope for the future.  The floodgates should be open..... with careful control. I am hopeful the current administration's inelegant approach is tilting towards that worthy goal.
