Hello, I am a lawful permanent resident since 2016. My mom worked here in the US for 20+ years and she petitioned us when she had her greencard. When we got here in 2016, we received our greencard months later.

Sadly, i misplaced my greencard last 2023, and I immediately filed for I-90. I already did the biometrics so I am just waiting for it. The receipt notice i received didn’t say anything about an extension. Only the acknowledgement that they received my application and the other is the biometrics appointment itself. I read that LPRs who filed I-90 are eligible for a 36 month extension. I am worried because my greencard will expire in 2026. Am I still eligible for the extension? Despite them not saying it's approved yet and them didn't put it in my receipt notice?

And is it an acceptable document if I file for I-551? Which by the way, I am currently looking for a job, and I really want to get one before I get hired so I don’t have delays getting it. Can I still get an I-551 even though I am actively looking for a job? Or should I wait for me to get hired so I can have a reason?

I am panicking right now. I feel like it's the end of the world for me. And my family is disappointed with me because I lost it.

I appreciate all of your help.

English is not my first language. Sorry.

If you don't have a physical GC there's nothing to extend.

For job, you can and should go through I-9 verification by showing a valid state ID (or valid Driver's license) and unrestricted social security card. Employer cannot demand to see a green card. You can tell them you're permanent resident and show the docs I mentioned.

Having said that, you should get I-551 stamp in foreign passport to have proof of status.

Did you move since filing I-90?

Any plans for naturalization?

That's the thing. I also lost my social security card. It was unrestricted though. I only have pictures of them on my phone.  I cannot currently get a replacement social security card because I don’t have my physical green card. :((

And yes I have plans for naturalization but I was given the impression that I need to wait for my physical greencard before I can apply for naturalization.

i did not move since filing I-90.

Can i get an I-551 stamp even though I'm still actively looking for a job?

Just get an ADIT stamp, you just phone up and they mail it to you. It will be valid for a year and works as a replacement green card until the new one turns up. https://www.uscis.gov/i-9-central/form-i-9-related-news/temporary-status-documentation-for-lawful-permanent-residents-lpr

Worst case scenario: if my I90 still processing when my greencard is expiring next year, can i still get I-551 even if my greencard is expired? I filed for a replacement, not for a renewal so i am not eligible for the 36 month extension

You can get I-551 stamp with pending I-90 case. You don't have any other proof of status without this stamp. Extension letters won't matter if you don't have physical GC. Extension letters don't extend validity of I-551 stamp, which is only valid for 1 year and has to be obtained again and again until you get GC or naturalize.

No, you don't need physical GC to apply for naturalization. If you're ready and eligible, file today. You can upload I-90 receipt in additional evidence and explain you don't have physical GC since you lost it.

This is a mess. Once you get I-551 stamp, you should be able to replace SS card.

You'd file I-90 for renewal once the time comes. But may be irrelevant if you naturalize before GC expires

i just called USCIS for an infopass appointment and they said they call me back within 30 days. Let's say i will have the stamp by march. My greencard expires in april 2026. Worst case scenario, my i-90 is still processing, (if i wasn't able to file for naturalization yet) If i renew my I-551 before march 2026, and my GC expires april 2026, would it cause any problem? Will it not let me file for I-551 with an expired greencard?

You can get I-551 stamps as long as you have I-90 case (replacement or renewal) or N-400 case pending. It becomes difficult to get I-551 stamp if you don't have any pending case with USCIS.

If you're not naturalized before April 2026, you need to file another I-90 to replace your GC.

If your replacement I-90 is pending in April 2026, you'll never get replacement and you can forget about it.

Replacement produces card with same expiration as lost GC. USCIS isn't going to issue card with new expiration. They won't issue card at all if it's last expiration of lost GC.

So you'll need I-90 replacement at that point.

What's holding you from filing N-400 today?
