Hello! I'm in the process of filing my N-400 application, and I'm encountering a problem. The application asks for information about my husband's previous spouse. They divorced a long time ago, and while she was a permanent resident at the time of their marriage, we have no way of knowing if she is still a resident or has since become a U.S. citizen. The N-400 question specifically asks whether the ex-spouse is a U.S. citizen. Please what should I do? Thank you!

If you don't know, list unknown. If you need more lines to answer the question than provided, separate sheet of paper with the question number and your details at the bottom should be the way.

Where in the N400 online or paper form does it ask for this? I've seen it in neither.

Previous marriages info. If you filed online, it only asked you relevant questions which is why you may not have seen it. Download N-400 paper form and you'll see it. People who were married before need to put this info

Seriously think I might be blind, but the only reference to previous marriages I see is this and it doesn't ask any further questions:

Is this what you guys are referring to?

You're right. I checked N-400 and couldn't find what OP asks for. I think it might have been a question on other forms, but not N-400.

Thank you sooo much!!!!

@milimelo I have another question please. I received my green card in February 2020 and have been married to my U.S. citizen spouse since 2019. Should I apply for citizenship now as a spouse of a U.S. citizen or under general provisions? Thank you.

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Applying under the 5yr rule generally requires less marital evidence.  Since you are 5 yrs an LPR, I would check the "General Provision" box.
