Hi! Im an au pair on a J1 visa that expires in June, i was thinking about getting a B2 visa after finishing my program but I would like to know if it’s something I can do during my 30 days grace period, any of you went through the same process? Do i need a lawyer for it? What are the steps i need to follow?

Basically the same as getting your J, fill in the application attend the interview.

30 days, depends on the backlog at your home Consulate.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

How did you get a J?

You need to return to home country as u did not complete term of the  J visa

if you did not complete your J visa program, you must leave the United States within the designated timeframe, which is typically 30 days after the program end date on your DS-2019 form; if you do not complete the program, you may not be entitled to this grace period and may need to depart immediately depending on the reason for non-completion and your sponsor's instructions.

After the completing home country's obligations , u can apply tourist visa

Understand you did not comply with 1 US visa,  so chances you will be approved for new 1 is slim

Does your J1 visa say smth along the lines of "subject of a 2-year rule"? If you so - you can not get another visa until after you return to your home country & spend at least 2 years outside of the US.

If not - I knew plenty of people back in my time on J-1 who changed their status to B within the US and traveled for an extra couple of months. But I don't know the process, and this was back in early 2000s.

Im not subject to the 212 rule but that gave me a little bit of hope, so thank you!

Research the laws and implications thoroughly though.

From what I saw on this forum, things changed drastically since early 2000s.

Also from what I've heard before: even though people switched to B almost with no issues after J, it would then result in extra scrutiny when applying for any visas in the future in US consulates overseas.
