Well I'm officially in the US now

Hey all,

I crossed over with my UHAUL this past Saturday. I had called the border to ask what kind of inventory they wanted and the customs agent on the phone said a list of what is in every box. So i did just that. Going through customs was a breeze....they didn't even check my UHAUL or ask what was in it. I knew I should have packed my wine collection and my plants! Oh well.

On Monday I also went to the SSA office and filed for my SSN. I was told approximately a 4 week wait. For now I will just twiddle my thumbs.

Car is with me and we'll see what happened with this in a few months.

Other than that, I just found out on Friday that I got accepted into graduate school at the University of Washington.

Such a beautiful day here today and I'm glad I have all the free time to enjoy it.

Yay!!!

Glad everything went smoothly. :)

I went to the SSA office today and applied. I originally went so they could look and see if a number had been generated as it should have been, and since one had not, the man there told me to fill out an application form and that if I wind up getting two cards just to bring one in and it'll be no problem. :) They told me that it should only be two weeks, maybe less to get it, so hopefully yours will arrive fast too! :)

Congrats!!! just curious how long after POE did you go check on your SSN card? cheers

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied,that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

ps you are brave risking a U-HAUL FROM CANADA

did it come with tyres and brakes , seems they are becoming a optional extra

when you get a u-haul in ontario these days

I think this was directed to me? If not oh well, I'll answer anyhow. :P

I checked on my card two weeks after POE -- I know they say to allow three for it to arrive, but I figured that if it was to arrive next week, it'd have been generated by now to allow for mailing time. Plus, I've got some job offers (temp to begin) that are just waiting on me getting the card (or at least, the number), so I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask. :) I wasn't originally intending on re-applying yet, was just wanting to find out more information that they refused to give over the phone, but then the man who was behind the counter suggested I apply then, so I figured he must know what he's talking about. :)

just a question here for the car i believe you filled in some forms at the border and did they give you something back on tht so tht u can go and register yr car i forgot wht its called..

and also wht papers they looked for the car any thing frm the Mfgr
