Obtaining SSN taking a VERY long time

I thought it only takes 2 to 4 weeks, but its been almost 6 weeks now and still no SSN. We applied in person on Jan 6th. We called back last week and they said they are still processing it. Is this normal?

Did the representative at SSA tell you there were no issues when you went? I would also check you want card for the 765 and 485 forms.

Things went very smoothly at the office and he said it would take up to 4 weeks. When we called last week, they said they were still processing it and thats all she knew.

Weird. Don't know what to say. Maybe try another office

it's a US federal office trying to deal with immigration info (another US federal office)

never expect it to be as promised or fast with our government

 

If USCIS sends the info to SS and all is in order,  the card will come

Are you a female and did you apply "incorrectly" in your MARRIED Name instead of in your maiden name?

 

If so, there is a small chance you will get one at all until EAD or I485 approval.

She's never been married. We're not married yet since we're getting her SSN first before marrying.

Did you go to the SSA office before Day 14 after arrival in the US?

Going too soon when DHS has yet record the entry into the system means SSA won't be able to process it. When that happens the application usually sits on someone's desk to die until you aren't eligble anymore. 

Not many SSA agents will recheck those types of applications when there is no record of entry found. 

 

Edit: if your timeline is right, you likely went too soon. Dec 24th>> Jan 6th is a really short window considering two holidays during. 

I'd go in person and ask to speak to the agent listed on your receipt in person to see if it's actually being processed or left to rot. Don't speak to anyone else but them or their supervisor. Make them pull up your file in front of you.

I read recent posts that said you don't really need to wait 2 weeks and just a few days is fine. I thought 13 days would be ok.
