Not sure where to put this one. My spouse is Canadian and got her greencard in Nov 2024. Her Passport is expiring so we are planning to make a run at the border next week to do pictures and the renewal but it won’t be same day. So when reentering the US ( land crossing) she will only have her greencard. I know this shouldn’t be an issue but just need some reassurance.

Are you saying she has to relinquish her existing passport while the new one is being processed? Either way just a valid green card is sufficient for entering the US by land, I did that well over 100 times while LPR and was never once asked for a passport.

Yes. The passport will stay for renewed.  And awesome. I just needed reassurance before we drive 5 hours l

Hope you two are doing well!  I remember it was a bit of a battle to get there.

You *can* get an expedited passport if need be, but I'd just pay the extra and get it FedEx'd home.

Driving.  DL and GC is all she needs :)

Yeah we have to go on a Friday due to work/school so we will just be having it shipped back to the states.  If I wasn’t in school full time we could go sooner but I also just had major surgery so I missed the first two weeks I can’t miss more lol

Does she have to go in person for a renewal?   Many countries offer a renew by mail option (NZ, for example).

Not officially but she’s also not been back in 2.5 years so it’s dual purpose. She’s also concerned cus she used to do passport pictures at her work in Canada and knows how often they have issues so didn’t wanna do pictures here and hope.

You should be able to re enter just using your green card.

With regards to the passport, have you tried contacting the Canadian consulate in the US. I was able to renew mine in Dallas. You can also renew via mail. I believe you need to mail application to Sudbury ON.

I would make a copy of profile page to help u explain at the border when arriving back in US

and if Mass requires a real ID /DL , make sure that you have that

PAssport photos done at Wallgreens ,  UPS store,  etc are all accepted

Adil filed from US to renew his Moroccan with photos from Wallgreens

Not so simple for Canadian passport photos.  Just like the Montreal Consulate is sticky about things, Passport Canada is ridiculously sticky about passport photos, sizing, shadows, backgrounds and who can take them.  It's really annoying as a Canadian abroad because I could take my own photo with a far superior camera that would turn out better than a Walgreens any day of the week, but it's not accepted.

Exactly this. It’s worth a little road trip to be sure it’s correct.

I am Canadian and had to go back to Canada to renew my passport. Canada definitely has different standards for photos compared to USA. I had to redo passport photos in Canada. When you return to USA the ony thing they will accept for re-entry is your Permanent Resident Card to USA. You only need your Canadian passport to return to Canada. In the future you will need to have both with you when going back and forth. Hope this helps

Thanks! That’s the way we understood it too. Hopefully her renewal will be smooth sailing.
