Hello,

I filled N400 form for my wife and I in Dec 2024, and we received separate interview appointments in March. We just observed that in each of our forms, the Spouse details are not showing for some reason. My wife still uses her maiden name on all documents, could this be reason separate interview appointments or is it because since spouse details were not noted, they treated both application separately on their own and hence interviews scheduled on different dates?

Question:

1. Is this a problem at all?

2. Is there a way to correct this information in N400 form either now (online) or on the day of interview?

3. Does USCIS help on such matters before the interview?

Thank you

So I assume you filed online.

I also assume both of you are naturalizing under general provision (5 year rule).

If so, they are two separate cases. They may be treated by different officers on different days, and this is normal.

If you read N-400 form carefully, spouses' name and information section is not relevant for N-400 under general provision. It's relevant for people who're naturalizing under 3 year rule, based on marriage to US citizen.

When you file online, some sections are skipped automatically based on your case type.

Chill, everything looks good so far in your and your wife's cases.

Good luck!

This is so much useful information.

Yes, we completed 5 years before filing N400.

I called USCIS earlier today, and explained the scenario, and they suggested if Section 5: Spouse Details can be updated by manually printing a form and signing it and uploading as an additional evidence along with a letter of explanation. However, based on what you described, it might not be needed if both of our cases are treated separately. I plan to call them again tomorrow to ask and validate. Do you think that makes sense?

The people on the phone (tier 1) don't know things, they just make up answers.

My N-400 completed online also is missing details about my US citizen spouse because I filed under 5 year rule.

I see, and thanks for further clarification.

If I may ask: did you already got your naturalization done? As you mentioned you "N-400 completed online also is missing details", how did you handle it at the time of interview?

I'm yet to have my interview. But you can ask people who naturalized under 5 year rule.

Also, just read the form itself. Part 5, question 3. It says if not filing based on marriage to US citizen, skip to Part 6.

So that means ignoring question 4 etc.
