also if you can, the foreign fiance should apply for a social security number before getting married but after they have arrived in the US (within 75 days of arriving), otherwise you have to wait for AOS/EAD approval which can take a long time

these 2 forms are required

I-485 (adjustment of status)

I-864 (affidavit of support)

these 2 forms are optional, but it is recommended to do them. especially the work authorization if your fiance wants to be able to work while waiting for the greencard

I-765 (work authorization)

I-131 (advanced parole)

if you do submit the I-765 and I-131, these can be in the same packet as the I-485

make sure you read the instructions on the USCIS website for each, as well as the current fees

she received visa in October so when did she actually arrive?

u may have to check the box on your form for USCIS to get SS #

If she didn't come right away ,you may be able to go to SS yourself (with an appointment)

BTW marriage before end of 2024, you have to file IRS returns as married either joint or separate

She will get here in another month.  Do you mean I-485?

Is it better to check the box or go to SS office once she arrives?

In my opinion, it’s better to do the SS office and not wait on the 485. You need the social security number for certain things, and the sooner you have it, the better.

The only thing is that with the K1 visa you need to get it within 74 days of arriving, but it’s advised to not go before 14 days after arrival. This is because the systems don’t update often and her arrival/documents might not be in there and they’ll have to ask USCIS questions, which takes longer. 74 because they can’t issue a card after your I-94 expires within 16 days. It’s a hassle.

For me personally, they had to investigate if I could even get a SSN, this took 3 weeks, then my card was supposed to come first week of December, never came, and with all the holidays etc they couldn’t issue me a new card. I do have my number, just not a card. It’s drama. But I’m one of the unlucky cases.

Only thing is, if you get one yourself, you have to have it when you file 485, because it asks if you already have a SSN, and if you do, you can’t lie or leave it blank.
