Fellow blind people,

LASIK is great, but... cases when one sees 20/800 or worse and LASIK can be done to 20/20 are not all that common.

It all depends on the health of your eyes, size of your pupils and health and thickness of your corneas.

I wanted to do LASIK. They eventually decided it was too much risk for me. They said yeah, your vision would be sharp, but the world would look as if you are looking through the fog. All because I needed too much of laser exposer time. So no LASIK for me, waiting until technology is better :clock:

Also beware that LASIK does not fix age-related far-sightedness. Age-related far-sightedness develops due to the eye lense losing it's flex. LASIK only reshapes corneas, which is the outside of the eye (effectively "engraving" a "contact lense" shape on the surface of your eye (or, under a flap).

SO, it is good to check whether you are eligible for LASIK before you save up your money. All the doctors I called were saying sure, no problem with your vision. But after all measurements were done, some said you can't have it, some said I can. But those "can" people were sort of strange. Like in one palce a receptionist told me, oh yeah I had LASIK myself done here, it is great, and then she missed my hand extended for a handshake and then ran herself into a wall while leading me for a check up :o

My mom wears reading glasses occassionally, and I have told her many times to go get it done. But she's scared! We read this article about how if it 'goes bad' then you're fuct.

Ahh well, maybe next year!

I had it nearly 5 years ago. The absolute best thing I have ever done.

Life's just a crazy ride on a run away train

You can't go back for what you've missed

So make it count, hold on tight find a way to make it right

You only get one trip

So make it good, make it last 'cause it all flies by so fast

You only get one trip

Again, be careful,

if eyesight has gotten worse recently, it means it will likely get worse in near future . Then LASIK will have to be re-done. Not only it is a waste of money, but also LASIK can only be re-done that many times! (usually 2-3).

Well, a good doctor won't do LASIK on you unless you have at least 2 years of stable vision to show.

Javier's eyes have just recently gotten bad so he's going to have it done also.

Thanks, but I know that already. I've already told him he's probably going to have to deal with glasses/contacts for a while until his eyes stabilize. Believe me, you won't tell me anything I don't already know when it comes to having Lasik surgery. I researched it quite a bit before I actually had it done. I wasn't letting anyone near my eyes with a laser/blade without knowing what I was getting myself into.

Just couldn't stay my @ss away!

I want to get it done. I've been wearing glasses/contacts for the 15 years it seems. Can you give me a detailed break down of the procedure as I, too, am a little scaredy-cat and don't want any pain

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

Do you want to borrow the DVD?

Well ok first you lay down and they put some numbing drops in your eyes. Then they push on your eye and things go a little blury, then they lift the lense which is really weird. Then they laser you for a minute or so, then they put the flap back and smooth it out. THen you're done!

So no anesthetic and it doesn't hurt when they lift the lense?

Clearly you have to be a good candidate to have it done and I felt good about the doctor I went to because he will turn down people if he thinks it won't be in their best interest.

You have lots of tests done to make sure that your eyes are the right size like you said, and if they aren't then that's unfortunate. I was a good candidate and it worked out well for me.

They use numbing drops so I didn't feel a thing. It didn't hurt whatsoever, it was just weird because you are basically watching everything happen.

Yeah, you can see everything. It's just really blurry after they cut the flap. It doesn't hurt at all. It only took about 15 seconds for them to laser both my eyes. I guess the time it takes depends on how bad your eyes actually are.

 Well I will look into it for the future. I know it is pricey but so is buying 2 pairs of new glasses every two years!

I'd need a lot of valium cause I would be FREAKING out at the thought of someone cutting into my eye! I definitely want to get it someday though; I have had terrible vision since I was 7 and would love to not be burdened by contacts and glasses. My biggest fear is that I'll end up somewhere and lose a contact and have something bad happen (like that scene in the Mummy where the guy loses his glasses and gets attacked :P). I know it sounds silly but I feel so helpless not being able to see without these stupid contacts!

I did it over 5 years ago, and LOVE it. Can't imagine wearing glasses again. The only thing for me that hurt was the contraption to keep my eye open.

Yeah that was a bit weird, but it didn't hurt me. I had a hard time focusing on anything with the valium anyways.

I'll have to watch the movie again because the lense was just kind of popped off, not cut. They put pressure on your eye then you go blank for a second then everything is blury and they lift the lense with some tweezers.
