Good morning,

I recently arrived to the US as a resident. I'm from Spain and my consulate would be the one in New York. One of the things I need to do is register as a resident. In order to do so I need to have a notarized copy of either my passport or my ID card (DNI). The issue is that I found that notaries in my surrounding states (New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware do not allow notarized copies of passports and ID.

For anyone who has already registered in the New York embassy as a Spaniard residing in the US, how did you go about the notarized copies requirement? The only thing I can think of is writing a statement (affidavit) were I say that the copy is authentic and complete and have that statement signed with a notary.

Thank you!

I am a Notary Public in Colorado and I am allowed to certify a true copy of a passport bio page. In New York, you should be able to make a copy of your passport bio page, write a statement that it's a true copy. Go to a notary with the original and the copy and sign it in front of the notary. Have your signature on the statement notarized. Hopefully that will be good enough for the consulate.

Thank you, I'll be doing this as I see no other alternative. I hope it's good enough for the consulate too!
