When to get an ID and a driver's license

After filing your AOS and while waiting are you able to get a driver's license and/or any government ID of any kind whether state(I'm in Illinois) or federal? If yes how to do that, if not then when would be the time to do that, thank you.

Typically you can get state ID / DL when you get a EAD. Did you file form I-765 with your AOS packet?

 

But it depends on state laws.

These are accepted docs in Illinois:

So need GC or EAD card. May use valid I-94, but that's typically for people on work visas the way I understand it.
