Thank you all for the useful information,

I just want to go in prepared as I heard many times how unfriendly the people from DMV are... they seem to have an awful reputation here in the US. So hopefully it won't be the case here.

Have any of you experienced bad times in the DMV?

You might want to check your local AAA and see if you can get it sorted there. We’ve done that, not because we’ve heard the DMV is unfriendly, but just to save waiting around in a queue for hours! For our learners permits, we had appointments at the AAA and were in and out in 10 minutes.

Since you have your EAD and SSN, most of the hard part is done. They could require some other documents like name on a bill or bank account but their website seems pretty straightforward with info. Many states will allow someone who is already licensed in another country to obtain a US license a lot easier than someone just starting out. Generally passing the written test and road test, rather than spending hours of driving time and classroom time. Note that the license they issue you may only be for as long as your EAD is valid for in some states. When you have your green card, go back to the DMV, update your status and they will issue you a full one.

Maybe it is different in your state but that’s certainly not the case in MA. Here you’re required to get a DL as soon as you’re resident. The 1 year rule only applies to tourists etc, anybody moving here has to take the test asap.

I’m in Mass. my wife didn’t have to take a test to get her mass lic. She had to get a driving abstract from Nova Scotia and with that they ‘transferred’ her lic. Each state has different rules and some countries are much easier to get ‘transfer’.

so if I am right, as I got my SSN and EAD already ,first thing I should now do is book this knowledge test though the DMV website, and take all the paperworks along with Foreign passport, EAD, SSN, utility bills and lease with NH address, my current UK driving license and that's it? then I imagine once I pass my knowledge test, I can then do my vision test on the same day?

Your UK license put that somewhere safe

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

what do you mean, I shouldn't take it to the appointment then?

Nothing to do with them

Yes, my advice is specific to the OP who’s from the UK. Sadly us Brits can’t just transfer our licences so we all had to take the tests.

Good afternoon,

Anyone knows the process or/and requirements to obtain a NH or any US state driving license, considering rules are similar, through a K1 visa AOS I-485 pending and an approved I-765 with currently having my SSN and EAD?

tried contacting via email and calls to DMV to find out what paperwork do I need to show when making an appointment, but no luck.

Thank you,

Jon

In Virginia, if you have a foreign license, you are exempted from certain requirements.  Also in VA, some countries, you could "transfer" (i.e. just fill form no new test etc.) but it was a very limited number of countries.  You could have gotten an international license from UK before coming to hold you over until you got the new license.  My wife did that.  Technically you are not supposed to use an international license if you are living in a country, but police never had an issue.  My wife and sister-in-law both did that.

After you get your U.S. license, consider taking your state's Driver Safety or Defensive Driving course.  You can get a discount off your auto insurance's premium.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

You can do that every 5 years I believe.  I always put it off or forget or slack off but do as I say not as I do.  🫣

In Texas, every 3 years.  My insurance company prompts me.

But this is off the OP's topic (my fault).
