It is a violation of the law to enter the US illegally or to remain in the US illegally.

Okay. Good point, but I think the research was discounting the crime of being in the United States illegally.

Isn't that the whole ball of wax?  Illegals shouldn't be in US at all.

I like the phrase "whole ball of wax" which I have never heard before. I shall find out what it means and try to incorporate it into my active vocabulary!

You are right. People should not be in the country illegally, but that begs the question of why they are coming.

I was in Aurora yesterday, lots of snow, and I know people who live there. And this is a real issue.

Denver is sort of a Sanctuary City. Not official but.

I remember when I came over, I was told to make sure small children wore their seatbelts, duh, anyway I mentioned that there seemed to be large families with children hanging out, in the back of the truck etc, told Police do not waste their time with them but would with me.

Also Denver downgrades charges to Agricultural Trespass, seems that does not attract the attention of ICE, what the true numbers are, well none knows.

Sadly lots of misinformation out there.

Because they can, same as the UK. For comparison Canada and say Germany much harder to work illegally, get benefits.

I was in Aurora yesterday also :) Bringing my wife to the Asian Market. I have several co-workers who live in Aurora and they have been fearful of these trans-national gangs.  And not just recently since it's popped up in the news. They have been talking about it for a few years now and how they're afraid for their neighborhoods.

Yes, labor demand. Work site enforcement would be a cheap way of dealing with the problem. A few business owners could be sent to prison for three months.

You mentioned the United Kingdom. It is much more difficult to get health care or enrol your children in school than the United States.

Going back to the original question, can I bring a note of positivity to this discussion?

A lot of the posts on this site relate to family reunification, mainly spouses and fiancés.

I saw an analysis that rated the United States 63rd hardest in the world regarding family reunification. So it quite easy compared to a lot of countries. Certainly easier than my home country, that was rated second hardest, which is why I am here.

So if you have a genuine marriage, as the opening poster does, you shouldn't have much to fear.

Lots of ways to insulate yourself from this risk.

UK is easy, well apart from the usual issues with the NHS, the tricky bit is finding a way to pay if you are not resident

A friend of mine started the process about the time I did, he went to India and married a lady who his Mother had found after years of his own failure

She got her visa in a month, he could have paid to expedite
