I tried to open a joint bank account with my wife and was not blocked because of her passport, but her lack of social security number or proof of residence.  Any mail I brought showing she lived at my house was not good enough.  They wanted a utility bill or phone bill which she couldn't get on because she didn't have a social security number!  We are stuck in a circle.  Now that she has her social security card we are going to try to open a joint account again.

Yes, very important to get the Social Security Card as soon as the I-94 is available.

I do NOT recommend getting the SSC with the EAD or AOS, because of your exact situation.

One rule that I advise all K1-to-AOS'ers is to get as much done within the 90-days or before the I-94 expiration, especially for name changes. Complete as many name changes as possible because most institutions recognize the I-94 and passport over the I-485 NOA1: SSN, State ID/driver's license, bank account, utility bills, healthcare cards, etc.

That is not to say all those evidences need to be included in the AOS.

I believe a good target for AOS is to file the I-485 within the first 30-days, and to spend the next 60-days streamlining the co-minglings or name changes. This is not a hard-and-fast rule, but it is a good goal to make the process smooth and have enough time to react in case life unknowns pop up.

We were able to get Jaycel added as a joint account holder on my bank account with her Philippine Passport and SSN

Same here bank, medical and dental and vision, beneficiary on life insurance and 401(k) none of that requires an SSN or DL. If anyone is telling you that keep pushing.

Only REQUIREMENT of marriage proof is a PHOTOCOPY of your ORIGINAL Marriage Certificate or a PHOTOCOPY of your CERTIFIED copy of your Marriage Certificate.

Any other evidence is a BONUS.

A marriage LICENCE is what you buy TO GET married. A Marriage CERTIFICATE proves you actually legally married. The MC is what you get back from county services/ court/ etc AFTER marriage. A photo copy of THAT is the only requirement of proof of marriage.

For any who may benefit -

  • Mint Mobile (cellphone company) did not require proof of SSN or residency to start service. This became our proof of address (utility)
  • If the international partner is able to show their new US address on their international bank accounts (even as just a mailing address), that is proof of address. Check with your bank first, ofc.
  • Once you apply for the SSN, you are given a letter with your name and address showing you applied. That is proof of address.
  • If you have animals, add them to the vet bills, license bills, etc. They do not normally require a SSN for these things and it becomes a joint bill and potentially proof of address.
  • I highly recommend talking to the license bureau's in person. I received one answer via the online chat and a different on in person.
  • When you go to the bank, you can explain to the banker that the k1 fiance is seen as in the US temporarily (which is true, until AOS is filed for and approved). When we added my husband to our (now) joint accounts, they were able to select that and then fill in the forms using his visa information. We did not need SSN at the time for this, but we have since received it and will be adding it to the accounts.
  • If you want to send proof of bonafide relationship with the K1 AOS you can submit notarized statements from friends and family, I believe USCIS mentions this specifically  :)
  • You can always ask your current utility provider to add their name to a bill so its joint, I was only able to find one (heat) and it did not require a SSN.

Hope this helps!

Well, simply think of it this way.  You got here on a temporary visa to get married.  What do you need to show to the immigration officer who've seen it all  that your marriage is real?  What makes your marriage real vs a fake one?  Simply put prove to them without a doubt that your marriage is bons fida.

Start from there and you be ok.

Include much as you can some examples are photos of you spending time together with family and friends and not just selfies, affidavit from as much people you know about your relationship, joint health/car insurance, bank joint accounts, joint lease/mortgage agreements, setup authorized user credit card account for someone new to the country with no credit history , joint car purchases, gift receipt to your spouse, joint tax filing documents, CERTIFIED copy of marriage certificate , etc.
