Hi. I am Canadian and my sister (a US citizen) who is applying for me. She gave me the form and it shows I-130.

How much time needed to get green card through I 130 for a Canadian citizen living in Canada?

My wife is Canadian PR. Will it delay the process?

So is it better to apply once she has Canadian passport to cut down processing time significantly?

Thank you.

Your wife has plenty of time to become a Canadian citizen before you’ll be applying for a visa - that’s maybe 25 years away as a rough guess.

The I-130 will take a while but the real wait is for a visa to become available to you. The Visa Bulletin is released each month, you can keep an eye on that to see how it’s moving. https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/legal/visa-law0/visa-bulletin/2025/visa-bulletin-for-january-2025.html

Good luck.

HI. Thank you for your reply. Getting approved through I-130 takes few months or year but even after approved, for me to get visa it takes years (probably 10+ years)? that's what you are saying?

any way to expedite?

Way more than 10 years. Probably around 25 as I said above (that’s a very rough guess but gives you an idea at least).

The I-130 is only the first step, once that’s approved you then have to apply for a visa, but there won't be one available to you by law until your Priority Date is current on Table A on the Visa Bulletin.

There’s no way to expedite it until a visa is available to you. What grounds would you have to expedite?
