Travel Insurance

So I checked out the forums, but I am thinking, did anyone get a years travel insurance or just to cover the flight over?

I heard getting a years insurance would help out, should you need any dental care etc....

As we all know, it is expensive in the US to get treatment without cover.

Any thoughts?

Travel insurance will not cover you for any dental or medical work in the US. It is designed purely for travelers, not immigrants. The minute the insurer finds out you're a immigrant they won't pay out and there you are back at square one with no cover. If you search around you can find plenty of places that do offer immigrant health insurance at reasonable prices.

As for covering your luggage, I think, again, another search will come up with some people who have managed to cover their luggage alone.

As a side note -- can it not be a sticky somewhere, maybe on the moving to America forum, that states that there is no way anyone can get travel insurance to cover their med insurance in the US? It's such a common question! (sorry OP for the mini hijack)

I took out travel insurance for the year rather than by the flight as it was cheaper and I didn't keep needing to go in and buy for specific dates. This was insurance in case of medical problems experienced while I was visiting my fiance in the US and for the time after I arrived here until I got married. I was covered by his insurance when we got married. I figured I could probably argue that until we actually got married and filed for AOS I was not considered a resident since I was only allowed to remain legally in the country for 90 days and may have chosen to return 'home' within that time period. I never had to use it, but it was peace of mind for me by having it.

I took out travel insurance for the 1st 3 months I was in the states, as said before by Kathryn, I was not a resident of the USA then (I gues I'm still not technically) and as soon as we got married, I was covered under my husbands insurance.

I took out travel insurance for six months but i would have had to go back to england to claim! Not an issue if it was serious enough then that would be more important than not abandoning my GC application. Fortunately I didnt need it so never found out if it would have been valid insurance but it was there for emergencies only.

You need to ask some serious questions of the insurance company. I asked outright of Blue Cross if their travel insurance assumed that you were still covered by your countries health insurance. They agreed that that was the assumption. A travel insurance policy should anything happen would bill my home province to recoup the money they pay out to me. If something serious were to happen they said they would just stick me on a plane and fly me home (not an option for me on K-1). Make SURE you ask some of those kind of questions before you buy a year's worth!
