You will have 2 filters one for the engine one for the cabin, a quick fix is to blow them out with an air compressor

Dresden in Los Angeles and our Confederacy of Dunces

LA is burning.  And the derelict people responsible are worried that they are found out as charlatans and empty suits.  The leftwing voters who enabled them are getting angry over the inferno that their chosen politicos green-lighted—as if they are shocked, shocked by the consequences of their voting.  [...]

It was the cabin one we got a back up for, but you're right, we should also get an extra one for the engine.

that's the one i was referring to.  some vehicles (like my truck) don't have a cabin air filter.
in the event of ash falling from a fire or volcano, it would probably be best not to use the AC if one can avoid
it as that requires extra power from the engine, and thus more air through the engine air filter....

Democrats Killed Los Angeles And No One In Power Cares

The horror that has hit Los Angeles is something we haven't seen since Mrs. O'Leary's cow kicked over that lantern in 1871.  Back then, Chicago burned to the ground and roughly 300 people died.  That was more than 150 years ago, things were different then, and things are very different now.  There is literally zero reason for a repeat, in any respect, of what happened in Chicago, and yet we are getting just that because of the mentality of the radical progressive leftists who've run that city for all but 8 of the last 64 years.

The Great Chicago Fire makes sense in a weird way.  Wood and brick were the building materials of choice back then, and wood burns like mad.  There were no zoning laws to speak of; buildings were clustered together because "traffic" was a bunch of horses stopping for water or a poop.  Go to any old town's "historic district," and you'll see what I mean – it is not rare to find "roads" or alleys where you or a friend can touch buildings on both sides of the street.

When fire hit one house, it risked wiping out the block or the section of town for those very reasons.  Add in the infancy and luddite nature of the firefighting profession and technology and it was a recipe for disaster.  Almost every major city around back then has some (much smaller) version of the Great Chicago Fire.

But we aren't living 150 years ago.  Los Angeles is not a densely clustered town of swinging-door saloons and rickety wooden buildings; it is heavily regulated (just try to build something there or put a pool in your own backyard, and you'll find out how heavy-handed a government can be), and sprawling metropolis with millions upon millions of people.  There is more money in the greater Los Angeles area than most countries in Africa and South America.

"Modern" is an understatement to describe LA, or at least describe how it was…how it appeared to be.  [...]

Surviving a House Fire

The Nature Of Home Fires

Delta Smelt Fish Association Reiterates Support For Gavin Newsom

SACRAMENTO, CA — With Governor Gavin Newsom facing withering criticism over his preparations for wildfires, the Delta Smelt Fish Association hosted a press conference to reiterate their support for the Governor.

The fish expressed total support for the Governor's decision to allow millions of gallons of rainwater to give them more room to swim, as opposed to collecting it to put out fires.

"We fully support Governor Newsom's water management," said the Delta Smelt spokes-fish.  "Things really looked dire for us delta smelt fish, but thanks to Governor Newsom, [...]

Ugh

Anyway issues I see

Insurance seems a lot of uninsured properties and I do not know of those who are covered will have cover for the additional costs of covering current regulations, seems most properties were built before 1990 and are a long way off current code.

Then there is the issue that apparently they are trying to restrict new builds and will these be classified as new builds

As was mentioned above the process is very slow, could take years before a brick is laid.

I know where I am you want to pull a permit for say a new roof and they check everything else and make you fix things that have nothing to do with a roof. So even part damaged properties could have issues.

They could of course ban rebuilding in some areas or make it practically impossible, and then who would insure them?

Also if you just want out how much will the site be worth?

Seems they have restricted Insurers from not renewing in certain areas for a year, well that just delays the inevitable. Not sure what happens if a Company just pulls out of CA.

Then there is FAIR coverage with is Gov mandated and basically Companies that are still in CA have to take a share of the risk of those policies so that just encourages Companies to reduce their portfolio, even if they are writing low risk areas they will get stuck with FAIR coverage.

I've seen most of that here in SW Florida and in the FL Keys after several major hurricanes.  A lot of people under insured and some without insurance.  Sucks when you are insured for say $400k and to rebuild to meet code its going to cost over $800k.  A lot of those people sell the property and leave the area.  Always seems there are people with money willing to come in and pay what it takes to have what they want.  The price of paradise.

I remember here after hurricane Andrew in 1992, that devastated Homestead, major changes were made in the building code to construct structures that were much more wind resistant.  People found out that tape on the windows and paid up insurance just didn't cut it.  And what wasn't dictated by building codes the insurance companies made sure there were huge incentives to upgrade or pay the price.

Also we went through, and are still struggling, with insurers willing to take on the risk for an affordable price.  The state stepped in and created Citizens Property Insurance of Florida to insure folks when no other insurer will.  It's the only insurance I know of available in the Keys.  Lucky for me I built to the new codes and then some, and have done well even with the direct hit from hurricane Irma.  Had damage but it was just below my $14k deductible.  After that I dropped that super expensive insurance and now self insure.

Good for Florida, but at this point, it sounds like California is 100% hosed.

The Insurance Industry never struck me as being particularly logical, more like a roller coaster and I am not here to defend it.

I had dealings with the US before coming here but corporate not personal insurance.

I was surprised at how controlled everything is, regulated at the State level, this is not normal and it never occurred to me that this would be the case.

So each State is different, sort of like dealing withe different Countries, and in CA rates had to be approved and justified using historical date but the cost of reinsurance could not be included, which is weird.

I assume as long as the Insurance Companies were making money they went along with things, as I mentioned things started unravelling, the gov set up the FAIR plan, more catastrophic events, and the Insurance Commissioner is a political appointee so the market became more and more distorted.

It also encouraged? people to build in areas where logically you would not if the full cost of the insurance risk was taken into account, sort of like Florida, well some people can, would but if you have a mortgage, need Insurance as apart of that and the full cost was taken into account, perhaps you would not or build very differently.

There has been a sort of similar situation in the UK with new housing developments being built on historical wetlands and guess what they flood, duh. I remember going down the M4 a lot and past an area that was always wet in the winter and wondered why on earth they subsequently developed the area,

Anyway this is on a much bigger scale, and with the continuing effects of distorting the market I am not sure what the answer is, the State can try and put pressure on the Insurance Companies but if they cant see how they will ever make any money the logical response is just to pull out as many have done and more will do, which will of course just put pressure on those that remain.

I suppose there is a solution but not quick or cheap or likely to happen

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”
