Traveling when Greencard and Passport have different names.

My Canadian passport has my maiden name on it while my green card has my married name. I started the process to change the name on my green card (timeframes were estimated at 18-24 months). It took less than 3 months and they renewed my green card as well.

 

Now, I would like to travel back to Canada as my dad passed away. I don't want to wait for my Canadian passport to renew. Can I book a one-way trip there with my passport name and the return ticket in my green card name? Or do I book everything in my passport name and carry my marriage certificate with me.

I'm sorry about your loss.

Passport is what allows you to board the plane. GC is what you need on US soil to enter the country.

After you land in the US, use your GC to go through border control.

You go through border control in Canada. They usually look at your ticket and green card when going through.

Passport is what allowing somebody to fly. One cannot fly internationally on GC.

 

Who looks at GC? US CBP Preclearance? Sure you'd show Canadian passport upon check in to airline and GC to US authorities.l futher in process.

 

One should book tickets in passport name IMHO.

My wife has traveled like this for years.  The key is booking the tickets in the name on the passport you are using for travel and keep a copy of your marriage certificate with you.  In the 4-5 years before my wife naturalized, and used her Russian passport to travel and GC in her married name to re-enter the US, no one ever asked to see our marriage certificate even when looking at the passport and GC with different names.  Now that my wife also has a US passport, we now use that for travel and she only uses her Russian passport to enter and leave Russia.  Changing one's name in a Russian passport is a big pain, so my wife has no plans to do that.
