I second the walk-in.  Just be prepared to wait.  It will be a big weight off your mind if you can get this done before you leave.

I went in today at 7:30 a.m. and waited in line. The supervisor told me they could not see me as USCIS had not rescheduled my appointment with a new date.

He said that when USCIS gives me an appointment date before I go to Australia, and the date is while I’m in Australia, I should come in and speak to him before I go, but my new appointment should be scheduled in 30 days. It seems doubtful that I will receive a new appointment date in 10 days.

He said they do not accept walk-in appointments if you have missed an appointment, and I cannot wait until someone doesn’t show up. It’s all by appointment only.

Maybe it’s just Florida, I guess you’re lucky if you walked in days after a missed appointment. Such a shame.

Please share your thoughts on what to do if I have issues re-entering America with my extension letter, expired green-card & valid Australia passport. Should I bring anything else with me? I guess my global entry won’t work since my GC is not valid. So much anxiety!

I am sorry this is the situation.

What to do?  Don't travel.

OP can be boarded with an expired Green Card and original 48 month extension letter.

I went in today at 7:30 a.m. and waited in line in hopes I could get my biometrics done, as others in this thread have suggested they did the same.

The supervisor told me they could not see me as USCIS had not rescheduled my appointment with a new date. If I get a new date before I leave for Australia he said I can come in and see him and do it, but since USCIS has not given me a new appointment date, he can't do my biometrics. He said within the next 30 days I should receive a new appointment date.

If I don't receive a new appointment date by the time I leave for Australia, do you think I should bring more evidence with me to get back into America other than my extension letter, expired green card and valid Australian Passport? I have to go back home as this trip has been planned over a year in advance and I haven't been home in 2 years. I was away in California when the letter was sent and didn't get an update via email I was a scheduled appointment.

Silly me, should have checked my account every day.

Don't travel?? Even though i have an EXTENSION letter allowing me to leave America and work in the country with an expired green card?

If I can't leave the country, how can I work in the country? All very confusing..

When I spoke to the Supervisor he said this HAPPENS all the time, especially over Christmas and New Year Holidays.

I just called USCIS and they confirmed with me I can TRAVEL out of the country with my expired green card, my I-797 Notice of Action extending my green card for 48 months & a valid Australian Passport. The I-797 Notice of Action makes my Green Card VALID to re-enter the country & work in the country.

You can MISS & CHANGE your BIOMETRICS appointment only 2 TIMES before your case is abandoned and this is my first time, if I am in Australia when the appointment is rescheduled, I can change it only ONCE MORE..  You can reschedule it online, message them through your USCIS account or call them!

I know to take information from USCIS customer service with a grain of salt, but my expired Green card is valid with my I-797 extension letter. My case is pending a NEW APPOINTMENT DATE.

Just don't attempt to do it on Jan 9 - all federal buildings will be closed.

Walked in today, told by the supervisor they could not see me. You can only walk in if you have a new appointment date in the future, not one that has been missed and USCIS is currently rescheduling.

I have read several experiences from people who tried to schedule new appointments and never received a notification about a new appointment, so I would definitely try to do a walk-in. Bring your original interview letter and explain that you were out of state and did not know about your appointment. Hopefully they will be able to do your biometrics. You don't want to get denied while you are out of the country.

That's why it was urgent to go ASAP. You'd have more time to fix it.

I'd try going to a different location, maybe they're better. I don't know if you ever dealt with SSA, for example. Location A may find reasons not to give you services, so you have to go to location B and eventually get it resolved.

Good luck!

I wouldn't trust USCIS phone support. Their job is to tell you whatever you want to hear and get you off phone ASAP. Many people get in trouble listening to their advice. They're not held accountable for anything they tell over the phone.

The supervisor was saying anyone would have a difficult time letting me do my biometrics because USCIS is rescheduling me a new date.

If I had a new date, I’d be able to do the biometrics today, but because I was pending a new date, they can’t do anything.

My case is pending a NEW APPOINTMENT DATE.

Hopefully, USCIS will actually reschedule it and don't forget about it completely. It happens.

You are free to travel if you wish, we're just giving you heads up on what might happen. USCIS is pretty good at quietly messing up cases leading to denials and months of stress.

My extension letter tells me I can travel out of the country and work in America as it gives me 48 months on validity on an expired Greencard.

I am only pending a biometric interview. Hopefully I get the appointment date before I leave.

Yes, I’ve heard horror stories of it all. I am going to keep a close eye on it while I travel back to Australia. Hopefully it goes smoothly for me and doesn’t result in a accidental denied case

I would not travel, but maybe your risk tolerance is higher than mine. Yes, you do have that extension letter that allows you to travel and work in the country with an expired green card, so long as you attend the biometrics and USCIS has no reason to deny you.

A lot of undocumented immigrants work in the country, and they still work here. Just because A is true it does not mean that B is true. But I digress.

Hopefully your appointment will come in before you leave. Or you can try a walk in at a different location.

I have to go home for family reasons. It’s a trip I can no longer delay or reschedule at this point. I do believe & hope the extension letter will allow me to return into the United States with a pending or scheduled biometrics date.
