Can one travel with a re-entry permit multiple times or is it supposed to be used only once to re-enter the US?  I'm in a similar situation as the OP's spouse in that I need 1-2 yrs to wind things down before I can permanently settle.  Which means I may need to travel back & forth between my home country and the US in the next little while with more days being spent abroad than here (although definitely entering the US every 3 months).  In order not to field any questions re absences abroad I was thinking about getting a re-entry permit but once I get one I will still continue to travel to the US frequently vs. being absent for more than a year which I believe is the whole point of this document.  Would this be an issue?

Multi entry , though, if your absence is under 12 months, you can just use your GC.  Or, if you make multiple trips of over 6 months, use it each time, as it indicates your travels  are temporary and that you retain your domicile in the US

Thank you... but what I'm also confused by is how I would "use" this document.  As a Canadian passport holder I don't ever need to show anything such as a visa or GC to board a flight to the US and as a Nexus card holder I don't even interact with CBP officers all that much because I can use Global Entry.  I can't recall the last time anyone checked my travel documents usually the GE machines take your photo and off you go.  I guess if I get a re-entry permit that will be tied to my passport and if CBP wants to question me further on the basis of my travels being flagged (randomly or otherwise) that's when I would produce the said travel document?

Yes i would use it if your repeated entry is questioned.

Make sure your Global Entry profile has Green Card details added.
