Thanks for the replies.

It would seem the obstacles are

1.  Ex wife isn't a citizen and may not want to ever file for citizenship.   To the person that mentioned I pay for her N400 form.  I would do so gladly.  I am not sure she would qualify for citizenship though.  She has only started working officially this year.  I suspect she has male friends that have helped her financially.     I am going to broach the subject of citizenship with her.  Would she qualify for citizenship?  She is law abiding so that isn't an issue.    I may have to not only pay for her forms but pay her to agree to become a citizen.  She seems perfectly content with her current status.

Employment / unemployment is not an issue for naturalizing.

 3.  I would consider moving to her country and get married there, and then down the line apply for a visa through the k-3 route.  By then I presumably would have worked out these 2 issues I listed above.

This is accurate  👆👆 You would file the I-130 for a IR-1/CR-1 visa once you clear up the other obstacles.

That is a relief. She is a private person, so I don't know much about her employment other than it appears she is employed now.   What types of obstacles are there for a person like my ex-wife becoming a citizen?  She is a pretty smart person so I imagine she would pass civics tests.

I lost track of what the visas are and thought k-3 existed, but it seems there is a different type of visa nowadays that does basically the same thing.

Crimes, not filing taxes, spending too much time outside the US, false claim to citizenship, voting, drugs use, immigration fraud.

Thank you for that information.  I don't think she would be tripped up by any of these things so now I must convince her it would be a good idea to become a citizen.  Like I said earlier, she doesn't seem to care.  If you were trying to convince somebody citizenship is a good idea, what would you say?

- She could spend any amount outside of the US without worrying about losing GC.

- Sometimes people get into legal trouble for no good reason and that affects their ability to stay in the US. Citizens would not be deported, but LPRs can depending whether crime is a deportable offence under state laws

- She can pass citizenship to any future kids

- She can sponsor her parents or adult kids to come to the US as a citizen

- She may get additional benefits as a citizen when it comes to SSA, medical help

- She may get certain jobs that require US citizenship

Excellent points, thanks a lot.  There are some things there that might really benefit her.  I might be able to convince her with those bullet points.

I was speaking to a friend of mine who has a little 2nd hand experience in the area of immigration dealing with friends and such.   I mentioned my dilemma to him, and he stated that the rules have changed through the years, and it was different way back in 2008/2009 when I brought my lady here on the K-1.  According to him, In terms of support, I'd be under the rules of that time frame and not the rules of 2025.   I don't know if any of that is true, and I don't know what the rules were back then anyway.  For all I know they could be the same.     I guess this is when a lawyer would be needed to determine things like this.

I'm not aware of any significant changes to rules about support, but others who were around for longer here may chime in.

I was around then, nothing has changed.
