N400 Interview Experience Brooklyn Field Office

I just had my interview this Monday 12/23/24 in the Brooklyn Field Office at Federal Plaza in NYC and thought I would share my experience. Just as a point of reference, I applied online end of July under the 5 year rule. 

 

Checkin: Security wouldn’t let me into the building 45min before the interview time, so I had to wait another 15min. There were two lines (one for ICE and one for other appointments) and security took a while. After the security check I made my way up to the 8th floor where the Brooklyn Field Office is. You have to check in at a window where they check your green card and take your appointment letter. I got assigned a number and was told to wait in the waiting area for my number to be called.

 

Interview: I got called almost on time, as the officer picked me up from the waiting area and walked me to his office. He then went over the documents (green card, ID and passport), took a picture and fingerprints. After confirming my identity he then had me sworn in for the official part. First thing we did was the Civics test. He asked six questions which I answered all correctly. He confirmed after each answer that it was correct. We then did the reading and writing comprehension test, which I also passed. Next we went through my travel history. I had to add one more trip, as it was after my filing date.  He had it already in the system, he seemed happy that I had put all my travels in the form at the time of filling as he would have otherwise had to do it himself. After that I confirmed my home addresses and then we talked about my employment history. I had to confirm all the dates and employers. Interestingly he wanted to know how I financed my living during a short period of unemployment after moving over to the States. I stated that I used my savings and he was happy with that. After that he concluded the interview and said that he would recommend me for approval, but he would have to confirm with this supervisor. In addition, he said there might be the option to get the oath done right away if I would be interested. This was a surprise to me, as I thought the Brooklyn Field Office wouldn’t do same day oath. I said I would happy to do so, so he had me waiting in the waiting area for him to check with his supervisor. After a short time he came back out again and said his supervisor had my application approved and I would be doing the oath today. 

 

Oath: The oath was held on the same floor. The officer took my green card and put me in another waiting room and told me that I would have to wait for a couple of additional people to be approved. After around an hour there were 5 additional people and a new officer came to the room with the naturalization certificates. We had to go up to another window to verify all the dates were correct. After that she had us all stand up and pledge the oath and we were handed the certificates.

 

Overall this was a very pleasant experience. The officer was very by the book, but pleasant and friendly at the same time. I was very pleasantly surprised that I was able to take the oath on the same day. I hope this will help some other people going forward. I am happy to have ended my USCIS chapter.

My interview was at 8am and the oath was like 2.5h later.

Interesting - Brooklyn field office is in Manhattan. 
 

26 federal plaza is in Manhattan - I had both GC and N400 interviews there.  Manhattan field office on 3rd flr, Brooklyn on 8th.
