Lai and I are going to Oahu at the end of next month, staying in Waikiki. We plan to see the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial, the U.S.S. Missouri, and Diamond Head. Does anyone have any suggestions for more places we should see?

Just Oahu, or heading to Maui?

Well, we've only got a week; not sure if we can do Maui as well, but I don't know yet.

OK I was just gonna suggest Whaler's village in Maui. Have a good one  I hope to get my fiancé to Hawaii by the end of the year. I had a really great cheeseburger at Cheeseburger in Paradise in Maui.

I remember snorkeling at a place not far from Waikiki...I think it was Hanauma Bay--the most beautiful fish I have ever seen!

I would recommend three places to go to. Pali Outlook which is on Pali Highway is wonderful for views as it is on top of the hill just outside of Waikiki. You can also go to the northshore which is where the professional surfers go and it's were the huge waves are. Pretty nice, scenic beaches too. On the way to the northshore you will pass a Dole Pineapple plantation that you can take tours of. I would also second the Whaler's Village on Maui if you go there. It's a 25 minute flight from Waikiki. Hawaiian Airlines has some pretty cheap flights and rental cars are right at the airport. Very easy to get around and the flight into Maui is pretty. When you fly into Waikiki make sure you ask for seats on the right side of the plane and get window seats. The planes always come in over the ocean and if your on the right side you can look right down on Waikiki Beach and Diamondhead. Very nice. Have fun and be safe. Ken and Mintra

Hi .. I lived on Oahu for close to 11 yrs.. Out leeward side of island.. in Waianae

anytime I learn of someone going I always suggest that if they don't do anything other than this.. . it is a must

The Polynesian Cultural Center out in Laie .

http://www.polynesia.com/

It is a bit pricey.. but the best way to get a good experience of all the Polynesian cultures. is to do the tour along with the Dinner. Many Hotels have transportation or can assist you with how to get there. The link has alot of information and also information on transportation to there.

the Bishop Museum is also something worth seeing.

http://www.bishopmuseum.org/

Mid September

ALOHA FESTIVALS FLORAL PARADE

The floral parade is best described as an "eruption of flowers," with pageantry unlike any other parade in the world. The procession includes pa’u riders, floral floats, hula halau and marching bands. This free, two-hour parade begins at Ala Moana Park and ends at Kapiolani Park. Discount parking provided throughout Waikiki. Attend the Floral Parade AND awards ceremony at Kapiolani Park!

AND of course... on the weekend... go to the Aloha Stadium.. for one of the best Swap meets around.. good place to buy goodies. to take home.. and also good place to just hang with the locals..

Best of all HAVE FUN...

That's so exciting! Hawaii is beautiful. My husband and I honeymooned there in November, and it was perfect!

I recommend Hanauma Bay for snorkeling for sure. I heard all kinds of stories about the wait to get in, the amount of people, etc., so I hadn't planned on going. However, we were in the area late one afternoon and decided just to stop by and see if we could get in. At that point, there was no line, and very few people there. We only had about an hour, but it was so worth it. Just beautiful!

We also really enjoyed Kualoa Ranch. They filmed a lot of TV shows and movies there (Jurassic Park, Windtalkers, etc). The mountains are breathtaking, and you can take an ATV ride, horseback ride, go canoeing, etc. It's pricey, but gorgeous.

We also stayed at Ko Olina, which is where a lot of locals with children go to the beach. There are man made bays which were constructed by semi-closing in the beach with rocks which protect the beaches from a lot of waves and erosion, and it's a great place to swim with kids, or even without kids.

I highly recommend the north shore. It's a lot more down-to-earth, and there are some great seafood restaurants. There's actually a really cool shrimp shack on the way to the North Shore. I can't remember the name of it right now, but it's a red building on the side of the road with some tables set up outside. It was recommended to us by several locals, and it was really yummy. When you get to the North Shore, be sure to get a Hawaiian Ice at Matsumoto's.

Waimea Audobon Center looked really really cool, but we got there right as they were closing. We saw peacocks in the parking lot!

I hope you have a great time!

We fly tomorrow afternoon  Our hotel is right on the beach: step outside, cross the road, walk in the sand :P Thanks everyone for the suggestions; I'm sure we'll be doing some of those! See y'all when we get back :)

Walk around the neighborhoods of Kaimuki(Waialae Ave.), Moiliili(S. King St.) Kapahulu(stop at Leonard's for malasadas) and Chinatown - go to Liliha Bakery and have some of their legendary Coco Puffs - check out the Aloha Flea Market at Aloha Stadium(there is an express bus from Waikiki), spend an afternoon at the Honolulu Zoo and Kapiolani Park, take a drive around the Windward side and stop at Waimanalo Beach...

Man I miss Hawaii - I grew up there...

Wow you are BRAVE....

No kidding, you lived in Hawaii? I was last there in '04 and miss it so much - my favorite place, along with Nepal obviously :) If I were rich I would love to spend half the year in Honolulu and half in Kathmandu - beach and mountains. :)
