Possible, but then they're violating the law flying over residential areas at night.

 

Looks like two amateurs got arrested, probably too curious. I hope it's just US government conducting some tests. Hopefully, we'll learn sometime.

My husband loves drones, unfortunately he hasn't been able to properly fly one for years, because TFRs are nearly always constant. And the way things are now it's likely some idiot would freak out about it and try to cause harm. 

 

The way we see it is, the vast majority of these are easily disproven as standard, private, or military aircraft. Other cases are bad camerawork, and a few other more amusing ones are very clearly celestial in nature. Then there are a few that I think are people trying to be funny in creating hoaxes or just feeding off of attention and mass delusion. It's with great frustration that radar, drone, and aircraft/military enthusiasts online are banging their heads at the stupid claims going on. There have been many pilots complaining about being struck by lasers just this week, eventually someone is going to get really hurt.

 

Another percentage I think are likely government drone/crafts testing a product they've had on hand for about ten years. Something has caused some urgency to test them.

Wise Men Get Off Course After Accidentally Following Unidentified Drone Over New Jersey

 

TRENTON, NJ — Multiple witnesses reported today that three wise men who identified themselves as Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar had ended up wildly off-course after mistakenly following an unidentified drone in the night sky that led them to New Jersey.

Someone along the eastern shore MD/DE claimed to spot a 'big drone' yesterday afternoon. Took a video and everything. It's very clearly an experimental aircraft called a Blackfly and I can imagine the average person would indeed freak out if they saw it.
