I , the father(US citizen) and wife(Romanian citizen) came to Romania to have the birth of the child this year (I know, who does that huh)

I called the US embassy in Bucharest a while back and they told me that a 1 day expedited passport for a fee was possible.

I recently asked again via email and now they are telling me that the CRBA and passport are printed out in the US , which has to be crazy wrong cuz how

da heck can we fly the baby out of here if the passport isn't issued here in Romania? And this person emailing me is telling me that 1 day expedited services are for emergencies only and that we'd have to wait 10 business days for processing. That was not what I was told initially. So which is it people?

It's taken us over 3 months to get the Romanian birth certificate due to paperwork delays, which we'll hopefully have by next week. Now my question about this is, do we need to do anything with this birth certificate before returning to the US?  For example , when we need to show our child's birth certificate for any reason like registering for school in America, does it need to be apostilled from Romania, and translated /notarized? Or can we just use it as is and have it accepted?

Tourist passports take about 10 days to get back - and yes, they're printed in the US and then shipped to your embassy to hand to you.

I made no mention of a tourist visa. we are applying for a CRBA and US passport for our foreign born US citizen baby.

I fixed it above - passport are very fast these days. A friend of mine applied on a Tuesday and it was ready for pick up the following Tuesday - I think it's DHLed.

You might have to translate the birth certificate for some institutions in the US, but most will accept the CRBA, or passport.  Did you also request a SSN for your child?

The other way around e.g renewing romanian passport was at least a month. I think they bundle it together and get a bunch of stuff shipped to the consulate at once at some cadence.

Just why?  I mean it cost less even with a private hospital over there, but beside the "savings" it honestly don't make any sense. Just think of that child every time it needs a birth certificate, he will need to know all this ####### and be able to explain it at the DMV, school, etc and fight all the clerks that don't know what a CRBA is...

A little off-topic, but have some empathy for the mother here. Giving birth is a stressful event, I wouldn't blame any woman for wanting to do that in the place where they're most comfortable, where they don't have to worry about language barriers and potential misunderstandings, where they have their family there to support them.

You have completed the CRBA?

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”
