My husband’s grandparents went to India with a tourist visa and unknowingly overstayed there. When they tried to fly back the flight company said that they overstayed and didn’t let them fly back. Can anyone please suggest what they can do to get back to the States?

This is not a US immigration issue.  They must comply with the laws of India.

Maybe the US Consulate could help them?

If they are US citizens, airline can’t say no  to them. If they are over stayed in India; what bases airline is making them to stay back? 🤔

I did the same thing.  But getting out of Russia.  Visa was expired for less than 24 hours... I had to pay a small fine, and get another ticket out of country [because it was a very, very, short overstay].  Their diplomatic mission (consulate or embassy) should be able to advise on how to solve this; the faster they can resolve the situation, the better (usually).
