Question about my SSN (K1)

Hi all, I’ve been in the U.S. for just over a month now. I applied for my SSN before getting married, and our marriage certificate (with extra copies) arrived last week. We’re planning to go back to the Social Security office tomorrow with the certificate, my passport, and my I-94 to update my name to my spouse’s name.  Do I need anything else to complete this process? I’ve heard it must be done within the 90 days. Thanks in advance

Is there any hurry to get the name changed on your SS card? You can have it done via the AOS process. We put Jaycel’s new married name as her “Legal Name” on the I-485 and I-765, checked yes that she had been issued a SSN, and checked yes that she wants the SSA to issue her a new card on both forms. Once they approve her I-765, the new card should come in her new married name and when the new card comes after they approve her I-485 it will come with the “Valid for employment only with DHS approval” restriction notice removed

Agreed. If bank etc asks to describe descrepancy, can always show marriage certificate...

 

To OP: SS card can only be changed 10 times through your life.

It's up to you if you want to use extra time and also pay another visit to SSA.

Good to know, we will go tomorrow and see what they say since we made plans and if they try and say no for whatever reason I’ll go ahead and request one in my new name through AOS, thanks!

There's no hurry to change your name on the card. Personally I waited with changing my name with SSA until I had my greencard in hand, that way I could both update my status and my name in one visit.

Do you have the SSN in hand now? If not they probably will just get confused and tell  you do not qualify for one.

If you have the SS card it's easier to wait until GC or EAD issued in married name to update SS. Banks and what not should be able to go ahead with using married names with your marriage certificate.
