Hi,

My wife and I are applying for the N-400, and she is unsure about whether or not to request a name change. I have a specific question: If she requests a name change on the form itself versus requesting it during the interview, does it make a difference in terms of scheduling the same-day oath ceremony or causing any delays?

She applied in a field office (newark) where they conduct the oath ceremony the same day, so I’d like to know if requesting a name change at the interview would affect this process. Specifically, do they typically process name changes before the interview, or is it handled only during the interview? Any clarity on this would be very helpful.

Both of you applying for two separate N-400s or just wife applying for her N-400?

If she wants to change name, why wait with request until interview? Put it on the form. Fewer new facts or surprises for IO is always better.

Name change typically means no same day oath. But others can correct me.

I’ve said in the initial message that she isn’t sure about the name to take yet, so she would have to hurry otherwise we can’t send packet. Also, I know that name change causes delays but I was asking about while filing VS at interview. Is there a difference between changing name on form VS changing name during interview? Does it mean no same day other either way?

If she's not sure she can make this decision at the interview.

Most likely, during interview would cause more delay. A background check has to be done on her current name and new name. If she files form with new name now, USCIS can perform the check before the interview. If she does it on the day, they'd have to run this check and it will take some time.

Name change in most cases means no same day oath, as far as I know. It doesn't matter ask for it now on form or during interview.
