I wonder which state mandates it... California never needed it in my case.

It's really odd, as you don't even need to be a US visa holder to get married in the US (just think of how many visitors get married in Vegas!), so wonder why it's needed in this case?

I 'think' it's a Texas thing.  I think you can get around it with an affidavit and extra paperwork but they intentionally don't make it easy.

That just sounds like the receipt form, the card will follow.

Whenever I look up the requirements for the license, it always states the SSN. Is this not the case? We’re in Texas

It would be odd if that was a requirement, I don't see how that can be the case. Many K-1's don't even apply for a SSN until after they are married.

So I'd speak to somebody in person and see what they say, good luck.

This is what I could find online:

In Texas, you can apply for a marriage license without a Social Security number by signing an affidavit that states you are not eligible for one. You can obtain the affidavit from the Register of Deeds office.

But this is not the case, because I am eligible for one, right?

Which district? For example, for Lubbock Country (after a quick Google), they say 'Both parties must provide their social security number or state they have none.'  https://www.lubbockcounty.gov/department/division.php?fDD=2-7#:~:text=*Both parties must provide their, the presence of the Clerk.

I'd just give them a call or pop in and ask. It would be very odd if there was no way to get married without one, after all tourists can get married and they definitely won't have one!

That I don't know.... I would inquire at the Register of Deeds office. Something along the lines of "I'm a K-1 visa holder that is soon to marry my US Citizen husband. As I do not have my SSN yet, can I get an affidavit from your office in lieu of having an SSN so that we can get our marriage license?"

have you tried going back to the SSA office and have them tell it to you verbally?

thats what we ended up doing when USPS didn't deliver his (that was an issue with USPS at the time, it ended up coming in the mail about 3 weeks later, 2 weeks after it was supposed to)

we waited 2 weeks from the day we applied to go back in and ask for it.

assuming you only need the number for the marriage license, and they don't need to see the physical card?

They told me I had to wait 4 weeks, and if it hadn’t arrived then I’d have to contact them. It’s been 3 weeks and some change, so I haven’t done anything just yet.

This is definitely an option!

I’m in Dallas, near Addison , we’re likely looking to go somewhere near Plano to get it done, so I’ll check to see what it says.

We have until Jan 30th to do everything, so I’m not stressing VERY hard. Just a smidge.

Just incase anyone is wondering if I have my SSN yet: nope. The wait is KILLINGGG me. We applied for it on the 15th of November, the receipt date says Dec 3rd.
It also says if you haven't received it in 2 weeks, contact us. So we're almost at that date. Sigh!!!

Sorry that it is taking so long for you. Have you decided on a new wedding date seeing as you have gone past the 12th December 2024 now?
