Carry the NOA1 letter around?

Permanent Residents are supposed to carry their green cards around in case they need to show proof of legal status.

 

What about I-751 petitioners? Do they need to carry around both the NOA1 letter and the expired green card?

 

With all the news about how Trump will be deporting illegals, even legal PRs may need to show proof at some random point. How are ROC petitioners planning to show proof for such checks?

I assume by "petitioner" you mean the applicant?  They should carry the extension letter and the expired GC.

It comes down to your tolerance for risk, I guess.  Living in a border or checkpoint area would be a big reason to do it, in my opinion.

I never carried mine other then having it with me when boarding the plane from and to the US.

However, I don't live next to the border and never had authorities asking for my immigration documents outside of USCIS / CBP.

Technically they should probably carry the extension letter but in reality even an expired green card would generally suffice.  If they really wanted to get serious they could and would confirm status based on 'any' green card.  We live in Southern CA and hit interior checkpoints out in the desert with some regularity and they never gave us any grief.

Couldn't pay me to carry the extension letter around. Hell, I barely carry my actual (now expired) GC with me unless I know I will drive in a specific direction from where we now live as there are check points. I have copies of both extension letter and GC on my phone too for good measure. It's never been an issue.

I guess carrying around the extension letter and expired green card in a Ziploc bag may be the way to go?

I asked my mother-in-law not to carry her green card around with her because it's expensive and difficult to replace.  She has a photocopy of her green card.

 

She also has a Nebraska State ID card that includes the Real ID marker on it.  I figure that if she's contacted by local law enforcement the State ID card will make more sense to them.

 

Since her English is poor, she also carries around a piece of paper with several phrases on it in both English and Bahasi Indonesian.  Things like "my English is poor" and "my daughter can translate...here's her name and phone number".

 

The worst case I could think of would be my wife and her mother being separated somewhere in public.  That's what I tried to anticipate.

 

We are nowhere near the border here in Nebraska.

Just get a cheap wallet to carry in your pocket or purse. Driver's license?  ID?

My kid's ex got pulled over for speeding one day.  Stupid 16yo didn't have his DL on him.  The cop advised to take a photo of it and his insurance and keep it on his phone in case something like this happened because they can run numbers.  Basically, any important ID like that - carry a photo.  

 

I didn't carry my GC when I had it.  I had a photo of my card.  If I traveled or would be in an area where I could potentially have to travel through an immi checkpoint, I carried it.  Too expensive to replace.  

 

Ultimately, your choice but it's risky to lose.  Maybe print a copy from your MyUSCIS account and leave the original at home if you are going to carry it.

I guess it depends on where you live (by the border/a lot of CBP/ICE presence). I just carry copies on my phone.

No.

For a start, mine only exists in stamp form in my foreign passport, which would be utterly stupid & impractical to have with me at all times. 

I have a photo on my phone of the expired card, the current & expired extension letters, and current & expired stamps. They are all also securely uploaded to dropbox.

I also have a valid real ID.

 

I feel that, despite the wailing and scaremongering, "Ihre Papiere, bitte" or similar is unlikely to become commonplace in the US....
