Hello all,

My fiance arrived in the states on November 5th.

We are going to the SSO tomorrow (November 19th) to apply for his SSN.

We went based off the information that we needed to wait at least 2 weeks to go in and apply, which it seems like it really isn't the case anymore? but I guess it doesn't matter in our case anymore.

anyway, my confusion is whether or not we need an appointment for this? I've called the number on the SSA site to make an appointment, currently have my number waiting in queue as the wait time is over 40 minutes.

I tried to call the office directly and also was met with an insane wait time.

I guess this question pertains to the SSO in Flint, Michigan. For those who have dealt with this office specifically, did you need an appointment for getting an SSN on a K1?

Or where you able to make an appointment while there? or should we be able to walk in without an appointment?

For how much they push using the ssa website for things you'd think making an appointment would be a lot easier.

We are still within the 75 days of the I-94 validity (the 75 day mark is about 1/19/2025). But am trying to get his SSN before the end of the year.

well I got a call back much sooner than I was expecting

and I asked "Do I need an appointment to get a new SSN?"

And the woman on the phone said yes, and then asked who it was going to be for.

I told her my fiance who is here on a K1/fiance visa.

And she was able to make us an appointment. And we got incredibly lucky that the Flint SSO had an appointment available for tomorrow (when we were planning on going anyway) so it worked out (so far anyway lol)

just posting an update for any one who was interested.

only waited about 10 minutes after our appointment time, and it only last about 10 minutes.

The lady seemed slightly confused but took my fiances I-94, passport, and the SS-5 form.

and after asking him a few questions (have you ever gotten a MI state drivers license or ID card, ever applied for state benefits) told us everything was good and he would get his card in the mail in 7-10 days.

was much easier than my anxiety lead me to believe lol

Happy everything went smoothly for you!

Sadly I didn't get one,tti had the same issue getting an appointment, but didn't know i needed one until I was there and had waited for an hour only to be told they don't do walk ins for this.

Beside that, the SSA in Jacksonville kept redirecting me to the work authorization and Adjustment of status being the only way to get one.

Apparently I didn't have enough anxiety as I was convinced this would go smoothly 🤣

The regulations on their own website state i CAN get one, if I can prove not to use it for work.

Husband is military,  so they need an SSN for me to add me to his health insurance and such, so requested them for proof of this.... all and all too much time passed and we now just waiting for it to come during the Adjustment of status.

Deep sigh... sadly it's not easy easy for everyone 🤣
