fee increases were first asked In 2022 and took years to be passed by USCIS

. As described in our Fiscal Year 2022 Progress Report (PDF, 1.08 MB), immigration filings decreased dramatically in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, and revenue temporarily dropped by 40%. A hiring freeze and workforce attrition reduced the agency’s capacity to complete cases, even as incoming caseloads rebounded to pre-COVID levels.

We lifted our hiring freeze in March 2021, and we are working to fill current vacancies by recruiting and training new staff—we are hiring!

We have continued to deliver improved services even in advance of the new fee rule. To stay on a strong fiscal footing and continue improving our delivery of timely decisions, we need the resources that this fee rule will provide.

Trump says his 1st priority is to send back the criminal illegals (out of the 11.7 million he plans to deport).  Those who are deported will take steps to return illegally same way they came the other times they were deported.

Article by American  Immigration Council talks about the cost,  a timeframe and all issues including what it would do to our economy if illegals were not here to do jobs USC's don't want to do.

https://www.americanimmigrationcouncil.org/research/mass-deportation#:~:text=Removing One Million Undocumented Immigrants Per Year&text=ICE's current detention contracts include,39%2C000 people in early 2024.

Trump only in office 4 years so lets see what he can get done about the illegals

Dont' forget both his wifes came on US visas (along with a lot of his workers in Hotels)

I can see him putting the ban back on the countries with terrorist training camps

I've been a member here since 2005.  The spouse and fiancée visa processes have been essentially the same the whole time.  Implementation of IMBRA and impacts from the Adam Walsh Act have been the big changes along with the K3 and K4 visas becoming virtually obsolete.  None of those changes can be attributed to any Presidential proposals or policies.

That means no noticeable changes in those processes during the first Trump administration.  I'm not aware of proposals to change them in the future.

I am concerned that the rhetoric is very anti-immigrant

I have not seen anything as of now which indicates there will be any negative impact on legal immigration.  However, I would not want to be an individual who is out of status.  Time will tell.

Yes, the main target of rhetoric is illegal immigration, with the talk of mass deportations. However, with Stephen Miller being named Deputy Chief of Staff overseeing immigration in his portfolio, there is some word that legal immigration (including what he terms "chain migration", or family-based immigration) is potentially at risk for being reduced or changed (sound like especially for those wishing to bring siblings and parents to US), as well as limitations like the Muslim travel ban, HB-1 visa changes, etc.

my predication is he'll massively cut funding for USCIS resulting in waiting times going from months and years, to decades. whatdo you all think?
  •

It should be noted that USCIS is funded by fees charged to those who use it's services.  It is not taxpayer funded.  So the above, is a prediction based on a false understanding of USCIS funding.

I had someone personally argue that illegals are actually needed to take the jobs that U.S. Citizens won't. That the economy would collapse if deportation should happen. As if this justifies all the possible drug mules, unvetted criminals, child traffickers, and cartel members pouring into the United States.

There is no reasoning with these people. An open border is bad news for anyone lucky enough to be born here, or who have the privilege of being here legally. It's all scaremongering for those who lack skills in critical and objective thinking. Scream in the echo chamber loud enough and by golly it must be true.

The case for mass deportations

President-elect Donald Trump has pledged to "launch the largest deportation of criminals in American history."  That is a quote from a Nov. 2 rally in Salem, Virginia, but Trump has said precisely the same thing dozens of times.  Still, through the course of a long campaign, with his improvisational style, Trump has occasionally worded his pledge differently.  For example, at his Madison Square Garden rally, Trump said, "On day one, I will launch the largest deportation program in American history to get the criminals out."  At an Oct. 25 event in Austin, Texas, Trump said he "will launch the largest deportation program in American history" before adding, "We have no choice.  We have got to get all of these criminals, these murderers, and drug dealers, and everything, we're getting them out."  Back on May 24, at his rally in the South Bronx, Trump pledged to "immediately begin the largest criminal deportation operation in our country's history."  So, variations in wording aside, when Trump talks about mass deportation, he is talking about the mass deportation of criminals.

It's hard to imagine opposing Trump's proposal.  Who would want to help murderers and drug dealers who entered the country illegally remain in the United States?  Yet we have seen much talk that Trump deportation plans go far, far beyond criminals and will ultimately lead to 10 million, 15 million, or perhaps even 20 million people being removed from the country.  [...]

i fully agree.  illegal workers work for less and undercut wages for those usc's with few skills (the young, the poor, etc) and the amount of money sent out of the us back to their home countries is staggering.  for all the noise i hear about a "living wage" it seems odd that the same who make noise about it are often the same who want sanctuary cities, thus having their cake and eating it too.
a search on google showed that

"Some estimate that undocumented workers send $70 billion back to their home countries each year.   Some news reports estimate that about 10% of remittances sent to Mexico in 2022 could have come from illegal activity."

I wonder what is included in reports about "illegal activity".  Is that illegal migrants working, or illegal migrants making money from other criminal activity, or both?

i suspect the "illegal activity" would be most likely felony level crimes.
