Hi everybody lovely peeps,

Some of you may remember me,  no worries if not....

I came to Michigan from Scotland on a fiancee visa, get married to the love of my life & lost him 6 months later to cancer.

USCIS kindly granted me a 10 year green card because I wanted to stay where my wonderful husband & I had our short but amazing life together.

It's been 5 years & I have built a life for myself here, he would be so proud of me 💗

I want to stay & acquire dual citizenship(I'm originally from Scotland) but I have no idea how or where to begin....I've been attempting to figure it out online but I'm not getting anywhere....

Please Please can someone here advise me?

I recall you amazing folks gave me so much help in getting & staying here already.

Massive thanks for any help.

Hi!   I remember you!

The US is fine with you having two passports.   And you’re now eligible to file the N-400 form any time.   Good luck !

I can't offer much in the way of advice as I'm less experienced compared to others on this forum, but I just want to offer my condolences.

I'm so sorry to hear your husband passed shortly after you went through the grueling immigration process to get in the USA to begin with. It sounds like you've went through a hellish time, but I'm sure your husband would be happy to hear you're settling in his home country and making a good life for yourself here. You sound like such a strong person and I hope things continue to look up for you.

Just a curious question for others related to the topic: I thought when you took US Citizenship you had to make a pledge of allegiance and denounce any loyalty to any other country other than the USA. Is this just a formality and the US isn't bothered should you wish to keep dual-citizenship? Also, any children born in the USA between a US Citizen and legal immigrant, would they be allowed to take dual-citizenship or not?

The US IGNORES other citizenships (the US doesn't force you to get rid of them), meaning when you take the oath the US will only see you as a US citizen and nothing else. You can still keep all of your other citizenships, but to the US only the American citizenship exists. Millions of us are dual citizens.

Children born in the US can absolutely have dual citizenship as well. For example, a child born in the US to a US citizen and and a Swedish citizen is automatically both an American citizen and Swedish citizen from birth.

It's the easiest part of the entire immigration journey. Just sign up and file your N-400 online, then start practicing the civics questions so you know the answers to all the 100 questions.

Start the application today, so you know what it looks like and what they want you to upload. You have 30 days to work on your application, if you need more time you just change something little in the application and you get an additional 30 days - you can keep doing this until you're ready to submit. A super easy, very straight-forward process.

I have dual US & UK citizenship so does my brother (we got mine ours from birth).  But, my brother's wife immigrated from Wales and she will be applying for US citizenship eventually and she will have both.  If you have children in the future, you can only pass UK citizenship for one generation abroad.  So any kids would have to return to the UK to pass it to any grandkids.

Nothing complicated actually from the US side of things. You'll keep your Scotland citizenship too. Setup a USCIS account (if you already haven't) and file N400 online; Scandi provided link above. Good luck.

Wow I just read your old posts and I just wanted to say how sorry I am for your loss but how awesome it is that you made it! That is not easy to do! I just arrived here in April and I can't imagine losing my husband so quickly and having to figure everything out to stay here. Congratulations on that achievement, I bet he would be very proud! I also loved the story of him standing up to hold you one more time, I cried my eyes out. But what a great memory. Some people spend a lifetime together never feeling that much love.

Good luck on becoming a USC! Where in MI are you?

I remember you very well.  I am happy to see that you are navigating that tough road strongly (I lost a spouse 11 years ago).  It really is a difficult journey.  I am also happy to say that filing for US citizenship online is pretty easy.  It really is the easiest USCIS process.  Good luck.

I remember you! Welcome back. File, become a citizen, and enjoy it. :) My husband got his citizenship last year, and we just traveled back and forth. Process was stupid easy and being a dual citizen took so much hassle out of traveling.

I remember you :) Simplest part of the entire immigration process. All the best!

I can explain it to you. But I can't understand it for you.
