Hey there,

In 2015 my partner and I received a 10 year Green Card ( his "extraordinary ability" )

In 2017 my father got cancer and we went overseas to help him.

We applied for a reentry permit and were overseas for 2 years ( without coming back to the US )

We came back just before the permit expired and were sent to secondary

The agents gave us a really hard time because of all the time overseas,  and told us that we are going to have problems renewing our GC and with citizenship.

Now it is been 5 years since we got back from that 2-year trip and we are not sure if we should or not apply for citizenship.

We have only been outside of the US on 2-3 week trips every year since.

my husband is scared that if we apply for citizenship it is gonna draw attention to our long trip in 2017, and we don't know what to do.

What do you guys suggest? thanks

You're still LPR.

If you met residency requirements (physical presence, continuous residence, good moral character) in the last 5 years, you're going to be OK naturalizing. You can consult a lawyer if you're worried, but I don't see an issue.

You also had reentry permit.

All of this fear was instigated by a CBP who had a bad day, doesn't know immigration law well and doesn't get to decide whether you'll naturalize.
