It’s naturalisation. Just because they are US citizens doesn’t mean they have to spell things incorrectly 🤣

Nah, don't be afraid of new world and its Z's ! 😃 Even American English spellchecker underlines "s" as a misspelling.

I naturalized in a country they used British way of spelling, so all my prior docs and college work has "s". But I easily switched to "z" when coming here and it was the best decision ever 🤠

Z is a statement in a way :)

What I struggle with personally is "do nut!" (or wait, "donut") VS doughnut. Color vs Colour. Aluminum vs Aluminium

Now, to the final test... Question 101 of civics test. Is it naturalisation or naturalization? Joking of course 😃

You can take the boy out of London, but you can't take U out of Colour!

We were both there. Congratulations! Still doesn’t feel real that just getting that piece of paper makes you a citizen now. Maybe I’ll feel it when I get my passport lol.

I like to believe it’s really the solemn oath that makes you a citizen. It means a lot. The rest is just admin stuff.

I like to think that staying in any country for a decent amount of time is what should make you a citizen. Paperwork is admin stuff. I am of course referring to being here legally and not getting into arguments of illegally or legally.

That's essentially what happens, as prerequisites for citizenship in most countries are living there for 3/5/10 years, knowing language and history and having no issues with law.

Paperwork is what proves legality. Even naturally born citizens have to go through admin stuff (or their parents do it) to get birth certificate, passport etc.

Admin stuff is essential to secure a country. Imagine somebody who has malicious intent just lives in a country for X number of years and automatically becomes a citizen. Admin stuff allows authorities to check the person before giving generous privileges to them.

This.

Otherwise, you can apply via an acceptance center or passport agency. A lot of people (self included) schedule appointments for right after the ceremony.

Thanks - this is what we are wondering, if there will be a possibility to apply directly after the oath ceremony, at the location.  I am guessing not as it is at a school in VT though...

Congratulations and thank you for the insight into your ceremony! A nice idea as well to have British beer and whisky the night before and then celebrate with American beers and bourbon the day of the ceremony

Can any UK people here confirm that we don't have to do anything special to maintain UK citizenship alongside US citizenship? Both are acknowledged and accepted automatically? That's my understanding, and confirmed for me a few times through various points of our journey, but looking for one last more recent validation of that before the interview.

Nothing to be done.

You remain UK citizen.

You also become a US citizen.

US only recognizes you as a US citizen in any relations with the US.

UK only recognizes you as a UK citizen in any relations with the UK.

This means you can't pose a UK citizen in the US, and you can't pose as a US citizen in the UK.

Otherwise, if you travel to a third country, you can use whichever passport and citizenship.

Thank you for confirming this! As I have wondered about this and looked into this briefly before and couldn't find anything online saying anything else needed to be done in regards to this.

Perfect. Thanks for the response -- very helpful. Feels essential to keep checking these days!

I would add onto this to clarify what I have seen others speak about when travelling between US<->UK as a dual citizen of both countries (this may apply to other countries).

As a US citizen you must exit / enter using your US passport; so when you arrive at the US border control you hand your US passport over.

As a British Citizen, when you arrive at the UK border, you should present your UK passport, so that you are admitted in as a UK citizen with no requirement for an ETA (electronic travel authorisation) and no restriction on your stay there, even if it is only temporary.

You may need to ensure the Advance Passenger Information System (APIS) data is updated correctly before checking into your flights, i.e ensure that on the return flight to the US it is your US passport info that is entered, and on the outgoing flight to the UK you may need to ensure it is the UK passport info so that the airline do not assume you need a (UK) ETA.

Hi all,

I completed my interview today and have a recommendation for approval! I am absolutely happy to have my interview successfully behind me and am just waiting on my oath ceremony now. My updated timeline for the N-400 is:

Submitted: 11/19/24
Case being reviewed: 11/19/24

Biometrics (reuse notice): 11/19/24
Interview notice: 03/05/25

Interview date: 04/10/25

Oath ceremony (prospective): 05/09/2025

Filed under the general five year category.

It is all just a waiting game now!

I had a pretty decent experience today at my local field office and am very happy with how things went.

I was called into the interview room by an officer and was asked to swear that I'd be telling the truth. We hopped right into the civics questions (got my first six correct!) and the reading/writing test. The questions seemed assigned at random and the reading/writing was incredibly straightforward.

The bulk of the interview was affirming my identity, confirming my travel dates on my N-400 and then answering the yes/no questions from the N-400 again. I highly recommend everyone bring a print out of their application just for reference.

All in all, this was a great experience and I am happy to have just one final box to check in this journey. Fingers crossed for the rest of you out there!
