My mom is 65 years old and has had a permanent resident card for 10 years. I want to help her get health insurance, but her previous insurance discontinued coverage because of her age. She has never worked here. What should I do?

She's now eligible for Medicare, but since she's never worked she'll have to buy into it. At the moment the full premium for Medicare Part A is $505/month and she'd also need to sign up for Part B at the same time which is $175/month. If she does not sign up now there will be an additional penalty if she signs up at a later time.

Depending on circumstances there are various federal and state programs for low-income persons that can help with the premiums, does she live by herself or is she part of your household?

Maybe get her citizenship. My mother came here at 65 too and never worked and is covered under medicare and medicade here in Mass. Costs her nothing. Get an N400 going pronto, make her a citizen.

What sort of Insurance did she have that was cancelled?

O Care could be a good option. Speak to your local Broker.

She is only eligible to buy into Medicare if she has been an LPR for more than 5 years

How long has she been an LPR?
