I know I've posted this topic in the past but since my husband could conceivably (hahaha) be here in a few months the pregnancy issue is becoming more "real" to me.

We have decided to do IVF instead of getting my tubal ligation reversed, for many reasons.

Has anyone here done IVF? Any good support groups online dealing with this? The one thing that scares me is the risk for multiple births. I had Irish twins in my early 30's and although I'm only 41 now, I really don't think I even have 2/3 of the energy I had then to deal with two babies in diapers at the same time. I heard they take out several eggs, fertilize ALL of them and put in the ONES (plural  ) that take. Is that true????? :help:

I believe that IVF places will only implant two eggs at a time nowadays, to cut down the chances of multiple births...

Any ethical clinic will be very careful and only put in the # of embryos you might be comfortable with going to full term...

That said, it is really expensive, so many people want to boost their chances of having a baby if they are going to pay for IVF...and as women get a little older, the chances of successful implantation go down, so many women will implant several, hoping one will stick.

I have two acquaintances who recently had success with IVF...one had one egg implanted, and now has a lovely little boy. The other had two implanted, and just added a boy and a girl to their family (they already had one baby). Just to let you know, the second couple had frozen the embryos from their first baby. So, they were babies from 31-year-old eggs, but the mother was 35 by the time they implanted! The wonders of modern science!

Bon chance!

Hi,

I don't have personal experience with IVF yet, but my understanding is that the number of embryos they put back depends somewhat on the individual clinic. Although there are guidelines that suggest only putting back 2, I don't think that there are specific laws governing how many embryos to put back.

Good luck if you decide to take this route. It is something that my husband and I might be doing in a year or two! :)

One more thing. The government does monitor the performance of fertility clinics and you can read there stats online. I found it very interesting that out of the 2 fertility clinics within 30 miles of where we live, one of them had a Live Birth Rate around 60% and the other only around 30% per cycle. It would be worth checking out the different clinics in your area to make sure you go to one that gets good results. Also ask the doctors their success rates, a good doctor should be honest with you and willing to share this information.

Good Luck

Kate

My good friend had IVF done. She gave birth to fraternal triplets about 2 months premature. They were kept at the hospital for a couple of weeks, but then released and have been very healthy since. She also did not want to reverse the tubal ligration she had done previously.

Overall, they were very happy with the results.

The risk of multiples is pretty high, but the techniques are getting better so they don't have to implant as many eggs at once. It's still very expensive, though, and physically demanding for the woman (if hormonal injections are part of the deal.)

Will your insurance cover it?

It depends on how creative the doctor is. There is a possibility that we can get around the whole ihadatuballigation issue but again, depends on the doctor. IN the end, worse case scenario insurance will cover any medications/hormones necessary. Capital One has infertility loans at pretty low rates so that is what we will do. Also there is another service that gives money back if it doesn't work. I haven't looked too deeply into that one. We're planning on doing this 6 months after he's here since the clock's ticking. :)

Out of sheer curiosity, why did you decide to rule out reversing the tubal ligation?

OK. So, I had to Google "Irish Twins". google.gif

That doesn't mean I'm stupid. It just means I'm smarter now than I was 30 minutes ago. ;) Thanks for the lesson in continuing education.

Out of sheer curiosity, why did you decide to rule out reversing the tubal ligation?

1) Who knows how long it would take to actually conceive and I'm already 41....I'd like to be *done* by 43.

2) I don't want to be pregnant more than once and I don't want to have to be on birth control if I have the tubes reversed and I'm *done*.

3) The chances of getting pregnant are a LOT better with IVF at my age than just via tubal reversal.

The reversal is about $6k cheaper though and my husband would rather do that but I'm soooo afraid of having more than one or not being able to have one at all.
