Proof of citizenship with an expired passport

Is it ok for joint Sponsor to use an expired passport for  proof of citizenship?

(expired just last month ) 

I couldn't find an answer if anyone can help thank you.

Why not just use birth certificate (if born in the US)? It doesn't expire.

Or certificate of naturalization if became a citizen later in life.

Great suggestions to use Naturalization certificate (if naturalized immigrant) or Birth Certificate (if born in the USA).

All docs presented as evidence must be valid
