Hi All,

We are in Buenos Aires and my Fiance's (Colombian | Beneficiary) passport was stolen this past Sunday.  I accidentally left a bag on the ground with the passport as we got into a taxi for th airport to leave the country and it was stolen.

We missed our flight due to this and I decided to rent an AirBnB for two weeks so we could get everything resolved.  My fiance went to the Argentinian police and reported it lost/stolen.  she did NOT report it to the Colombian government as lost though.

We have passed the inital steps andhave set dates to go for biometrics and the consular interview at the Colombian embassy the last week in December.

We are now locked in an argument about next steps and need advice.

My fiance wants to put up flyers where it was stolen offering a reward to get the passport back with no questions asked.  She belives she can still get it back (It's been gone for 4 days now) and doesn't want to report it.  Her concern is if we report it lost to her goverment we will delay the process and complicate things.  She has her Colombian ID so she can leave the country to go back to Colombia so she wants to wait for a person to return it.

I want her to report it lost to the Colombian goverment now and start the process for a new passport.  My concern is identity theft and to not waste any time getting a new one so we can have a new passport before the biometics and interview in December.

What are next steps that we should be taking here?  Also how do we report this to the US Gov / US Embassy so we don't have any issues?

Thank you all!

I can’t be for sure but I would always go the official way. There is no proof that she’ll get it returned and the Chance that someone would use it as theirs is way too high that I’d take the risk… if this delays the process that’s very unfortunate but the chance that it could become worse is in my opinion way too high 😕 sorry that this happened to you both

It does not need to be reported to USCIS. She must do whatever is necessary to replace the passport asap. I would recommend applying for a new one asap, usually the application requires a reason if it is not  yet expired. For a lost passport,  they will likely ask for a copy of the police report

Just get a new passport. There is no need at all to report it to US government or immigration. People lose/have them stolen/renew passports all the time so this isn’t an extraordinary case. I thought you were going to say that it was stolen with a K1 visa printed post interview in there but really, you should just get a new passport.
