The shift seen I doubt is caused by immigration issues, I was simply saying that if Bush had pushed through the Amnesty, I would expect to see the shift to the GOP in Hispanics become even greater.

Since the shift started in the 90's I doubt if the amnesty bill had nothing to do with it. In fact it seems the first amnesty and the shift away from the dems may have had some correlation.

Isn't a shift away from the dems the same as a shift towards the GOP? So doesn't your 2nd sentance contradict your first? Also if you actually read my post I didn't say the shift was caused by the amnesty, I said that a successful amnesty bill would cause in my opinion a greater shift.

thanks for posting an article showing how hispanics DO integrate into the america society.

as for hispanics going repub.... i've always said that the repub philosophy is closer to how a lot of hispanics think. but them dayum xenophobe extremists in the party make it unbearable to join.

I don't claim to know the reason for the shift. I was basically thinking out loud. I found the poll I was referring to. Here is is.

Today, the Center for Immigration Studies released a new poll by Zogby International on the question. It turns out Hispanic opinion is evenly split — 51 percent think amnesty is a bad idea and 49 percent think it's a good one. More interesting, though, is a further finding. Although 15 percent of Hispanics said they would be more likely to vote for Bush in 2004 if he supported an amnesty, 36 percent said they would be less likely. That doesn't sound like a formula for winning the Hispanic vote.

In general, Hispanics are more conservative, which would make them very good good supporters of the republican party. But the republican party is not very inclusive, especially when many Hispanics are tied up in immigration issues or know people that are.

I think the only people that are switching, are those that have assimilated into American culture to the point where they can be accepted by the Republican party. For the rest well, I think the republican party would need to change its stance on immigration or wait a few decades for more to become assimilated.

I really do think Bush's support for Amnesty and immigration was to get more Hispanic voters to support the republican party. Especially since the Iraq war and the many scandals have damaged support for the party. But for Bush, he underestimated how important nationalism is to the many conservatives, and thus was shot down.

It was well said. It shows that when Hispanics acclimate to our country and understand what each side stands for they tend to gravitate to the GOP. The fact that the GOP has some extremists is nothing new. The dems have their share also.
