City Hall/Courthouse Wedding First?

Hi,

I was wondering for USCIS Adjustment of Status purposes, if a city hall/courthouse wedding is acceptable at first, and then a couple of months later, if an interview is required for our I-485 (App. to Register Permanent Residence), if we can bring evidence/photos/video proof of an actual wedding celebration then. I have a giant family here in the U.S. and it will take months to book a venue, and have "evidence" of a wedding celebration. We hope to have the "legal" marriage first at city hall/courthouse and wasn't sure if USCIS would accept this as adequate proof of bonafide marriage evidence.

Thanks!

Yes, of course.   Any legal marriage is fine.

I think a lot of people do it this way :)

Indeed.  Fulfill the requirement in timely fashion, then plan the big shindig at your leisure.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

I was under the impression that the majority of us K-1ers did the court house thing. 😆

For AOS you need a document proving your are legally married.
Whether you ate cake and drank champagne after having a ceremony on the beach - or just stood in front of a county clerk without cake/champagne/beach - matters none whatsoever. And no, wedding pictures aren't required either. We don't have any, never did.

Jaycel and I are getting married a week from tomorrow in front of a magistrate at the courthouse and then we will be having a bigger celebration next year for family/friends. As long as you have an official marriage certificate as a result, that's what USCIS requires.

We had a "courthouse" wedding. (Our state doesn't do weddings at courthouses). It was small wedding with me and my husband, 2 witnesses, an officiant, and a friend taking photos. No one else. We had no problem getting AOS approved (not a K1 case though). We had a big wedding on our one year anniversary, but my greencard was already approved by then.

Nobody every asked us pictures of a huge wedding. We had a wedding in a park officiated by a licensed individual. We had a couple of friends for witness (I think total of 5 friends, two of them signed the marriage cert) so we can start the process. We sent in pics of that and that is all. We didn't even include pics from the launch we had right after.

I did a wedding at the county court house on Monday. It was very quick and easy. The clerk even provided two witnesses - her husband and daughter - at no extra cost! No pictures were taken, but we were promised that a marriage certificate would arrive in a few days.

Courthouse married, 1 witness, drinks at a bar after. That's it. Approved w/out interview.

No wedding industrial complex...stuff. I wouldn't have gotten married if immigration required all that fanfare.
