Rejected civil document at NVC (Korea Police Background Check)

Hi all. Just got a message from NVC this morning that my background check certificate from South Korea is the wrong one. I just wanted to double check if this is the correct one, and if so, what should I send back to NVC? Or do I have the wrong one completely? This was what the police station in Korea gave me. I am no longer living in Korea.

It appears to be the correct document.  What exactly did NVC say about it?

It was rejected with a "Please replace this with an acceptable police certificate from a correct issuing authority."

Then I would write back to them quoting the following.  You appear to have already submitted the correct document.

Available

Fees:  No fees.

Document Name:  For Korean national applicants: Criminal (Investigation) Records Check Report 'Issuance of permit to enter and stay in a foreign country’ “Bomjoi-Soosakyongryeok Hoiboseo: Waekuk Yipkuk-Chaeryu Heogayong”.

For Foreign national applicants: Criminal (Investigation) Records Check Report “Bomjoi-Soosakyongryeok Hoiboseo”.

Issuing Authority:  It is issued at any local police station in Korea.

Special Seal(s) / Color / Format:  It is printed electronically with an official seal of the Commissioner General.  A computer-generated anti-fraud logo should be at the bottom of the certificate for Korean nationals.

Issuing Authority Personnel Title:  Commissioner General, Korean National Police Agency

Registration Criteria:  There is no registration criteria.

Procedure for Obtaining:  Korean national applicants may apply in person at a local police station or online at crims.police.go.kr if they have an authentication certificate. 

Foreign national applicants must request in person at a police station. Applicant’s passport and one photo are required.

Certified Copies Available:  Certified copies are not available.

Alternate Documents:  Korean nationals and foreigners living outside Korea can obtain a police certificate through a Korean Embassy or Consulate.  They must apply in person at a Korean Embassy or Consulate. 

Exceptions:  None

Comments:  The certificate may be issued as a single document or as separate Criminal Records Check Report and Investigation Records Check Report.  Both are acceptable, but if issued as separate documents, both the Criminal Records Check Report and Investigation Records Check Report must be submitted.

I am not sure if that is the correct document or not.  It should say "범죄·수사경력 회보서" on it somewhere, which is a "criminal records history" report.  My wife is a Korean citizen, and the document is slightly different, but it clearly says that Korean title at the very top of the document, even on the English version.  What you have appears to be a "background check" (신원조사), so it might not be correct.

 

It may be tricky to get a different version, since I think foreign nationals in Korea have to get it in person inside Korea.  You could try including a note to NVC in writing and explaining that this is the document the police station gave you, then resubmitting.

 

Also, if you can speak/read, I would suggest you also try asking this over at the Mijunmo Naver Cafe, which is specific for Korea regarding US immigration stuff.  Someone there may know the exact answer.

Yes, but in Korean it is called "범죄·수사경력 회보서" ... it needs to say that in Korean on the document, even the English version will say that at the top. No where on the form will say "Bomjoi-Soosakyongryeok Hoiboseo" as that is just an anglicized pronunciation

 

The problem is there are a bunch of "forms" in Korea that include the criminal investigation records, and in English they get translated into similar things, so it is confusing.  Better to look for the specific Korean title.  The document the original poster included did not have that Korean title on the top.
