There is definitely a possibility that the I-751 interview will be waived. That’s what happened when my wife and I showed up for what we thought was our combo interview, and the interviewer told us that my wife didn’t have to come in at all. I just did the citizenship test, and that was it. Everything was approved within a couple of hours after.

You will absolutely have to do the citizenship interview though.

another thing is what i'm curious about is if they give a tablet and multi choice answers for the test of 10 out of 100 questions in california or it'll be verbal? my friend in tennessee was asked verbally but i read most of the uscis offices are using tablets now. i'm ok with both but multi choice of course is a no brainer so that'd be more convenient.

also what's the sequence of things, and what's next? meaning 1: removal of conditions interview if any, 2: n400 "interview" for whatever they want to ask there, and 3: civics test?

so i walk out of the successful civics test (or whichever is the last step on the big day), then what?

thanks

There's several scenarios and nobody can predict how exactly it will go.

1) You can have I-751 decided before your N-400 interview and removal of conditions interview will never be conducted

2) They may do I-751 interview on same or different date to N-400 interview

3) You can have N-400 interview only and they'll tell you they can't decide on N-400 because of pending I-751, then will decide I-751 few weeks / days / months later with or without additional interview

4) They may conduct both interviews and give you decision same day with oath on same or different day

5) They would typically start N-400 interview with civics test followed by yes / no questions, or do it the other way round.

Either way, because you're applying based on marriage to US citizen, I highly recommend taking the US citizen to all interviews you're scheduled for.

I'm seeing "Interview Scheduled (current step)" step in my online account but no document showed up in the documents tab neither did i get a letter. Is this just bad wording or the online account is not reliable and the letter went lost? Two "bad luck" coincidences at the same time feel highly unlikely.

Previous step that is showing "completed" was saying about attending at biometrics (if necessary) but i got a letter that they will reuse old one. Next step after "interview scheduled (current step)" is "case decision (not started)"

I'm sure if i just not attend on a scheduled n400 combined with i751 they wouldn't be utterly happy and nice at the next scheduled one. Contacting them via phone is probably impossible and i'm not sure if the agent i can reach over the phone can see much more than i do.

MyProgress tab is very unreliable. Neither estimates nor current steps can be trusted.

Just keep checking online account and wait for physical interview letter.

I-751 APPROVED!

n-400 still untouched and pending.

that said what's the likelihood that they won't want her to be there at my n-400? as i filed it asking them to combine it with i-751.

she'll be there for sure, i'm just asking...

n400 pending since last 24 july.

Congrats with approval! The question should be "What's the likelihood of USCIS asking where the spouse is if I come without her?"

Yes, quite a big chance.

If she comes with you, it's unlikely she'll need to go inside the room for N-400 interview.

and after an hour or so i had my n400 scheduled. i can't see the document online yet so i don't know what it says exactly. but who knows if it's a formality on the i751 saying 'card being produced' and they don't just combine the two and there will be an i751 interview (?)

They should not have I-751 interview if youe GC is being produced. Take new GC and I-751 approval letter to interview and give it to officer when they ask to see GC.

Even if they were going to do I-751, they would then realize they don't need to.

i may have asked this before.. but how is the n400 interview? what typical questions are they asking? (i'm asking the n400 interview, not the civics test)

Anything about your immigration, background and your spouse.

Remember dates, names, trips you took, places you lived at, placed you worked at. Know marriage date, birthday of your spouse and kids, where do they work or study, how you met.

thanks for all the info,

i'm not trying to be picky here, but isn't the point of the unconditional green card that so to speak she's no longer part of this process? although i filed the n400 asking them to combine it with i751 and the two decisions kind of happened the same moment (about 1hr apart according to my online account)

my i751 approval letter says can take up to 60 days to print and ship the card where as my interview is in a month and a half.

and my n400 letter says you must bring ths n that (unrelated to my matrial status) and is having a 2nd section saying "If applying for NATURALIZATION AS THE SPOUSE of a United States Citizen;" which is confusing. am i still applying for naturalization as the spouse of a united states citizen no matter the i751 approval?

we will go together, with lawyer, and bring all the paperwork they list and ask for anyways. i won't fail and fall at the very last step for sure...

it also says reading, writing, and speaking english (where i will use capitals and punctuation correctly but this is a forum so idc i never do when chatting online) and that it will take two hours. it sounds awfully long, not sure what they can do two hours long. oh well. last stretch.

yay.

If you filed N-400 under general provision, based on being a permanent resident for 5 years, then wife doesn't play a big role and isn't part of the process. USCIS can still ask about her and your marriage.

If you applied for N-400 under 3 year rule, based on marriage to US citizen, she's 100% part of the process.

Yes, whether you have approved or pending I-751, if you're applying based on marriage to US citizen for 3 years, you need to bring marital evidence and be ready to prove your bonafide marriage.

Some people never had 2 year GC. Then entered the US, received their 10 year unconditional GC because they were married for 2+ years. But if they apply under 3 year rule, they'll have to prove marriage.
