Do I have to create a new USCIS account for a paper-filed case even though I already had the account?

I filed my I-485 and received a notice in the mail with instructions to create a USCIS account using an online access code to check the status of my application.

But, I already had a USCIS account before this green card application, and I used that account number on the forms for my green card application. I expected to check the status using my existing account, but it seems like I need to create a separate account for this.

When I tried to add the case by receipt number on the USCIS website, it said the case is linked to another account. Is it normal to need a new account for this? If so, which account should I use if I file a non-green card application in the future?

Are you a sponsor or beneficiary?

I-130 is for US citizen sponsor

I-485 is for immigrant who's adjusting

Therefore they are different accounts for two different people.

I'm the beneficiary, The sponsor also already made the USCIS account for I-130 online submission. We can see I-130 status on the sponsor's account.

You need your own account for I-485 and your petitions such as I-485, I-765, I-131, I-751, N-400. Did you one have previously?

I have a USCIS account that I created when I applied for OPT (I-765).

but I didn’t create a separate one for the I-485 and other green card application forms. When the I-485 and other forms asks about my USCIS account numbers if any, I used the OPT USCIS account numbers, so I thought they would link my green card application to the OPT account. But, I guess it is not?

Sorry I don't have personal experience with this, maybe somebody else can comment.

There is a question (Part 1, Question 11) on the i-485 asking if you have an online account number with USCIS.  Did you fill that in with your account number?  If not, that could be why you are being asked to create a new account.  If yes, I think any pertinent documents would be uploaded to that pre-established account.

I did fill out the question with the USCIS account number I created before for other USCIS-related forms (not for the green card application tho). I also thought that the green card application forms will be uploaded to the pre-established account.

its 50-50. some case it's link (like mine), some case it's not link(friends), have to request online code, when online code not working, means u have to create a new account. it's uscis, it's always 50-50 chance.

Did your friend have a problem after that or was it okay?

if you are not OCD like me, there's no problem. if it happened to me, i will chase uscis to correct it. but to answer your question, there are many2 people who filed to USCIS never have online account. do not ask me why? some people just dont really care. in the end of the day, if u cant get online account work, u still gonna have the snailmail for everything anyway

2 friends cant get online account work, even after make a new account and request online code. it's okay, its not the end of the world.
