Hi folks, we've made it through all steps of the journey except citizenship.  My wife and I have been married for 6 years but we'd like to wrap it up within six months if possible so there's less trouble traveling back to Europe next summer.

I filed the N-400 online today and it was relatively easy for USCIS.  It's stating a projected processing time of 7 months.  If it's a straightforward application, think it could be turned around and onto the next step (biometrics) quicker?

Wife file N-400 in Aug 2022.  She took the oath in Jan 2023.  Took less than 6 months...Dallas local office.  Good luck.

Note: USCIS reused biometrics.

Everything is possible. Don't forget, there's an election coming and many holidays which can slow things down.

It will depend on the workload at your local office + background check turnaround time. Expect delays if there's a government shutdown... I take it you filed under the 5-year rule and not the 3-year one?

For me it took almost 4 months to the day from application to interview+oath, at the time of application the estimate was also around 7 months. This was also with reused biometrics.

Just make sure you factor in getting a US passport immediately after taking the oath or you'll find that there's actually more trouble traveling, not less, since you can't reenter the US without a US passport after becoming a citizen.

3 year rule, we just took our time with it.

Surname change; we have her green card and SSN card in our (my family) name, but her Ukraine passport is still in her maiden name.  We've applied to have it changed with her citizenship and US Passport.

If we face delays we could have the Ukranian consulate change the surname on her passport--this was nearly a problem as we were exiting the EU this summer.

The majority depends on the USCIS office workloads.  Shutdown looms, holidays, and people using up that vacation time before end of the year.

We ( my husband ) filed Nov 2023 and went quicker then I ever dreamed.

Best wishes for a quick &  final journey with USCIS.
