Took us all of 10 minutes... we did it just a few days after she arrived because we knew it would take at least a week to get an appointment

Brilliant - thank you!

I highly recommend filling the application out online and then booking an appointment. Our local office called us to the window exactly at the time of our appointment and since we filled out her application online, the whole process took us less than 10 minutes for them to make copies of her passport & Visa, and complete the application. Also bring the I94 with you too. After filling out the application online it should give you the option to book an appointment

I shall look at doing this online then - where do we get the I-94 from?

I did, I requested my SS# on my I-485. I entered the US in April, got married in June and filed for AOS on July 3rd, My I-94 expired on July 6th I believe. So not sure how long it is going to take but I am in a position where I do not need it right away so I don't mind waiting. The whole 'hurry up and get your SS# before marriage and then apply for a new one in your married name' looked like too much of a hassle for me so I decided to do it this way.

Not sure now post Covid, but I always found that the SSA offices had a big line first thing in the mornings and were much less busy after lunch.  I remember walking into my nearest office around 9:30am and it was SRO, then after my wife got her GC we went back to get the DHS note removed and we went around 2pm to the same office and there was like three people in line.  YMMV.

That sounds a long time to wait for an SSN.

It's because when you request it via the I-485, USCIS doesn't send it to the SSA for processing until they approve the AOS.

I think it is best for me to apply for one about 2 weeks after travelling to the USA and before getting married and filing the AOS.

You may as well. Then when you file your AOS and EAD applications, fill in your SSN on the form and check the box requesting an updated card from SSA.

Thank you for the advice. How long after getting married did you file your AOS?
