Maybe I am over analyzing it

Maybe I am over analyzing things, I recently filed the N400 for my immigrant spouse who is on going on the 3rd year of his 10 year Permanent Resident Card.  I was looking at the timeline and it shows a i751 form.  I never filed that for him.  Is that something that has to be done first before the N400? or is that only for the 2 year green cards?

It's his form. Technically, he filed it.

Estimated timeline? You can ignore it, it's hugely inaccurate.

751 is to convert a temporary 2 yr green card into a ten yr one (remove conditions  on it). If he has a ten yr one anyway there were no conditions to remove. You are fine

I don't know what "going on the 3rd year" means, but as long as your spouse had been a greencard holder for 2 years (minus 90 days) when HE filed, he is fine. As others have said, the i-751/ROC is filed by those who have conditional greencards (2 year cards).
